Consumed 08/20/08 at Blue Palms Brewhouse, Hollywood, CA.
This beer is black with very dark brown highlights around the edges. A thin skin of tan foam is the head here. Good lacing.
Aroma is roasted dark malts and chocolate.
Mouthfeel is a little thin: more in line with a traditional porter than with a double.
The flavor is surprisingly subtle: dark roasted malts. The tiniest fleeting flavor of butter. A coffee flavor is all backloaded at the end with accompanying minor bitterness. Sort of like taking a sip of a nominal porter then a tiny sip of black coffee.
I was not terribly impressed with this one and found it took a while to get to the bottom of the glass.

Pours a very dark brown, almost black color, with a small white head.
Aromas are faint, and not really there. Some sweet malts, and a bit of chocolate, but there isn't much to smell here.
Taste is very coffee like. But to me, it's too sweet. It tastes to me like this is brewed with some coffee extract? or something else is at work here. I could be wrong of course, but it just tastes too much like artificial coffee flavors were added. Some creamy malts are tasted up front, and a hint of bitter hops on the finish. Beer also seems to be fairly dry. It's not a bad tasting beer, but it just tastes "fake" to me for some reason.
Mouthfeel is nice and full, it's a well carbonated beer.
Drinkability is pretty good. I had no problem finishing this one, but it really didn't match up to others in the style... Pipeline Porter comes to mind as being a better "coffee porter".
