Arrived in Melbourne early evening and after checking in at the hotel decided to head for Gunn Island by tram. It was June and therefore dark by this time and what should have been an easy journey from the city centre proved difficult as the tram stops are not lit, the tram indicator boards did not work and there were no route maps onboard. But thanks to the friendly locals we found the place only to discover that it no longer brews!!!

Apparrently it hadn't brewed for around six months, even though the stainless steel brewing kit is still visible behind the bar and they were still deciding if they were ever going to restart.

A selection of craft brews were on offer but these were produced by Matilda Bay. I sampled Dog Bolter a 5% dark ale, porter style, too thin to be classed as a stout. Bombay Duck a 5.5% cloudy wheat beer served way too cold and the pick of the three Alpha Pale Ale a 5.2% hoppy IPA.

We had a decent meal in a packed dining room with a log fire roaring away to give the place some atmosphere. Worth a visit but would be better still if it restarted brewing.

Heard about this pub at Beertopia. Thought I would give it a go.

GIBB is a cool bar. You can see the brew kettles (Is that what you call them things) as you sit at the bar. You can get some food and the beer availiable is not bad. There are the usual imported beers. But really. If you going to a brew bar. Try their brews. Don't go asking for imported brews. You can get this stuff anywhere. The beers at Gunn Island ain't bad. Damn refreshing in my opinion.

Definitely a great place to try on a weekday. Try the IPA. Its pretty good. Hell try all of them if you can. =P

Give GIBB a go. Its got easy parking and the beer is good. What more can you want?

the coolest looking brewbar in melbourne for sure, unfortunately the beers dont really match it. being a CUB pub its not surprising really.

feels quite open and airy when you fisrt walk in, with plenty of tall glass windows and a long oval bar in the middle of the room. brewhouse is to the back, and is quite impressive. you can see a bit more action happening with this one. unfortunately as people start coming in, it becomes quite cramped. takes a while to get some service, but its always pleasant no matter how busy it is. i must say the girls they have working in there are pretty easy on the eye too lol.

the beers, which is what its all about, are a disappointment. with names like shot fox, cut snake and ducks nuts, youd expect the beers to be equally creative. they arent. the pick for me is the shot fox, which is the only one that is vaguely true to the style it announces itself as. the others are like wheat beers that arent. and now i see they have an actual wheat beer. they did have a competition to name this new wit a few months back. they called it mothers milk, but i liked my friends entry better...weaselweiss. more in keeping with their other names. and if you ever go in there, ask for gutted rabbit stout and see the looks on their faces at the bar. the rest of the beers are carlton or masthead. plenty of beers, none of them much chop overall. i wasnt sure whether to mark them higher or lower (i went lower because im into quality not quantity).

highlight here tho is the food which is pretty diverse for a brewpub and the dining area is in a glassed off section away from the bar. its a much more enjoyable place to drink the beers. i must say im partial to their chicken risotto there. good price overall too.

i dont bother to go to gunn island much. the beers arent good enuff. when it comes down to it, id expect to see empire lager on tap next time i was in there, because really its a brewpub for wannabe connosiuers. like most things CUB, its about the appearance and marketing, not the product.
