Reviewed from notes taken Fall 2014. Served on-draught in Austin, TX.
HEAD: Only about 1/4 of a finger in height. Recedes inside 30 seconds, leaving no lacing.
BODY: Cloudy yellow-copper colour of average vibrance. No yeast/sediment is visible within.
Appears inadequately carbonated. Not a unique or special appearance particularly for the style, but appealing.
AROMA: Neutral Belgian pale malts. Faint floral hop character. Faint white grape; I don't find any red wine or the like. Muted inexpressive Belgian yeast aromatics. Pear fruit.
Not real evocative or interesting. A pleasant enough aroma of mild intensity. I find no overt alcohol or off-notes.
TASTE: Pear, fruity Belgian yeast, Belgian pale malts, heavy sweetness, and raw wort-like maltiness.
Balance is okay at best. Not a great brew, but enjoyable enough. Where's the red wine Austin Beerworks was so emphatic about in their tasting notes?
Shallow. Flavour intensity and duration are average. Lacks intricacy and subtlety, which is a bit of a crime in a Belgian golden ale.
TEXTURE: Smooth, wet, fairly refreshing, light-bodied, and enjoyable.
Suits the taste okay, but fails to elevate the beer as a whole or to effectively accentuate specific flavours.
Not oily, gushed, hot, boozy, astringent, harsh, rough, or scratchy.
OVERALL: Downable, but like most Austin Beerworks beers it's underwhelming. I wouldn't get it again and it's not worth seeking out, but at least it's not boozy, which makes it above average given its high ABV when coupled with its innocuous taste.
C+ (3.11) / ABOVE AVERAGE

Belgian style golden ale aged in red wine barrels. Pours a golden/amber color with small white head and small, white lacing that dissipates quickly. Smell is great, wine up front with oak following. You get the wine and oak in the taste as well. Very good beer that I wish they still had on their tap list!
