Crystal clear light gold pour with a snow white one-finger head. Nice citrusy aroma. Taste is grainy with just a hit of herbal and citrus hops. A really nice juicy hop flavor comes out as the beer warms. There's lots of hop flavor but the beer isn't overly bitter. Finishes dry with a juicy and spicy hop flavor.

64oz brown glass screw-top growler filled yesterday at The Growler Room here in Austin, TX.

Served cold into a pilsner glass. Reviewed live as a pale ale per The Growler Room's chalkboard. Expectations are below average given the brewery.

The weight of the growler necessitates a rather vigorous pour.

No bubble show forms as it's poured.

HEAD: 3 fingers wide. Creamy as hell, with a sticky fluffy consistency. Bone-white colour. It's quite appealing, and the retention is good - about 5 minutes. Leaves messy inconsistent lacing on the sides of the glass as it recedes.

BODY: Clear translucent pale copper of average vibrance. Clean; no yeast particulate or hop sediment is visible. But it's so light and empty it almost looks like a helles lager.

Appears well-carbonated. Overall, it's definitely a subpar appearance for a pale ale, though the head looks nice.

AROMA: Fresh floral hops. Pale malts. Clean barley. Pilsner malts. Golding hops. There's some vague unevocative fruit hop character. It's also a biteen dank and herbal, with mild resins. I guess there's some tangerine?

It's largely an uninspired and uninteresting aroma. Average aromatic intensity.

No yeast character, off-notes, or yeast is detectable.

Suggests an overhopped blonde ale at best, and an estery pilsner at worst.

TASTE: An odd blend of blonde malts and pilsner malts with a generic hop profile of floral character, vague unevocative fruit, and some grassiness. Sure, the balance is decent, the build isn't bad, and it has fair depth of flavour, but the fundamentals just aren't there. It's not enjoyable to drink, lacks sufficient flavour, and just has a mundane generic feel to it. Why brew this?

Flavour intensity and duration are average. Ultimately, this is simple at the expense of the style and its quality, and offers nothing for the discerning drinker. The malt backbone is weak, and the hop profile isn't interesting in any way. It's hard to dislike in that it's very approachable, but it's so pedestrian it's hard to get on board with. As it warms, a faint graininess emerges - not a great flavour in a pale ale.

TEXTURE: As generic as the taste. It's smooth, wet, overcarbonated, slightly refreshing, and light to medium-bodied. Clean, to its credit.

Fails to elevate the beer. It suits the taste decently, I guess.

Not oily, gushed, hot, boozy, astringent, harsh, rough, or scratchy.

OVERALL: This may well be the most generic uninspired pale ale I drink this year, and it's not even February. I don't know what they're going for with this one, but I won't be buying it a second time. Austin Beerworks continues to disappoint. I think pretty much every non-contract brewery in Austin that offers a pale ale (save for Namaste) has a better pale ale than this. As average as they come, but not undrinkable. I'll finish the growler, and will promptly forget this beer even exists.
