FORMAT: Pull tab aluminum can. 16 fl oz. Canned 01/04/19 (found stamped on bottom of can). Cost was $2.67 at a Trader Joe's.
"Brut Double India Pale Ale." 10% ABV.
APPEARANCE: Filtered clear copper body of average vibrance. Fairly robust white colour head ~11cm in height. No yeast/lees are visible.
AROMA: Floral hop aromatics. Grapefruit. Candied citrus peel. 2-row/pale malt. It's a pretty timid aroma, actually, so it's tough for me to pick out individual notes. Not boozy or yeasty. I find no off-notes.
Who knew a 10% ABV beer could be so faint aroma-wise?
TASTE & TEXTURE: Not very hoppy for an imperial IPA, coming in pretty timid in terms of hop flavour. Shallow depth of flavour.
I get a hint of resin, faint candied citrus, floral hop flavour, and some muted pale malt sweetness. Very simplistic, but at least it isn't riddled with off-flavours. Hides its ABV surprisingly well. Has the hop pungency of your average pale ale.
It's a bit warm texture-wise (I feel the alcohol warmth in my gut even though I don't taste any alcohol). Smooth, slightly creamy, wet, well-carbonated, medium to full-bodied. Unrefreshing.
OVERALL: A very muted beer that fails to showcase or even emphasize hops well. Lacks the dryness and champagne-like effervescence this whole "brut" substyle is ostensibly going for. I don't get the appeal and wouldn't pay $2.67 a can again. I mean it'll get you drunk, but there's not much here for those interested in hop flavours.
