Moon Shark from Austin Beerworks. From Nathan, 16 oz can stored at 42 Degrees. Reviewed 1/6/21. Note that I use DD/MM/YY protocol.
Bottom of can stamped “CANNED 04/21/21”. Served at 54.1 degrees in a hand washed and dried glass coffee cup, my travel beer glass. Final temperature 59.1 degrees.
Appearance – 3.
First pour – Deep Amber (SRM 15), hazy.
Body – Between Amber Brown and Brown (SRM 18 - 20), opaque. When rear-lite, opaque and dark tan.
Head – Large (Maximum 5.5 cm, aggressive center pour), almond, medium density, rapidly diminishing and opening into low-density froth leaving a ragged five to ten mm crown, a rocky partial cap, and many frothy islands as the head retracts.
Lacing – None, just some lonely pieces of dying froth.
Aroma – 3 – None - no malt, no hops, no yeast.
Flavor – 4 – Begins moderately bitter with soy sauce and roasted malt, no hops flavor, no ethanol (7% ABV, as marked on container) taste or aroma. No dimethylsulfide or diacetyl.
Palate – 4 – Medium, watery, aggressive carbonation.
Final impression and summation: 3.5 Distinctly a bitter malty IPA. The soy sauce makes it a bit tough to really enjoy. Otherwise, an excellent mouthfeel to an ugly beer. Nice can art.
