Poured from a can into a snifter
Appearance – The beer pours a dark brown color with a small head of tan colored foam. The head has a moderate level of retention, fading and leaving a ton of bubbly foamy lace on the sides of the glass.
Smell – The aroma of the brew is strong of a roasted malt smell mixed with a decent showing of cocoa. Other aromas of a dark cherry and raisin are in there as well, mixed with a bit of graininess and a rather strong showing of a cola smell. Overall, the aroma is somewhat akin to a dark cherry cola like smell.
Taste – The taste begins with a nice roasty malt flavor that is paired with a caramel and brown sugar sweetness as well as some sweetness of dark cherry. As the taste advances a little bit of the cola taste comes to the tongue, but this taste is much lighter then as would be anticipated from the nose. Some coffee and more toast as well as some notes of molasses and toffee. Toward the end the sweeter and cocoa flavors surge at the expense of the roast, and leave one with a rather pleasant moderately sweet dark chocolate covered cherry taste to linger on the tongue.
Mouthfeel – The body of the brew is medium in thickness and creaminess with a carbonation level that is lower. For the taste and the style the eel is nice and creates a more dessert like sipper.
Overall – A rather nice dessert brew that has a good dark chocolate covered cherry taste, with out being overly sweet. A good one to try if the opportunity arises.
