At this point in my beer geek career, each new beer usually reminds me of some other similar beer I've had before.

Not this one. Monikken Kruin doesn't remind me of anything I've ever had.

And that's because it's not quite a quad, and not quite a wild ale. It's slightly tart, tipping it toward wild ale territory, but it doesn't quite get there. It's somewhat sweet, but not as sweet and as rich as most quads. It's a bit fruity.

If you're a style purist, you should stay away. If you like beers that tend toward the tart and funky, without quite getting there, give it a try!

a very strange take on a quad here, more rustic and less refined than anything really coming out of belgium, and a lot less malty and dark too. more of a moderate amber color to this than the big syrupy almost brown colored quads we are used to seeing. it has visible carbonation and some clarity, but not a lot of head on it. the nose is red apples, raisins, caramelized crystal malt, spicy belgian yeast, and a little bit of tang, not acidity or funk or anything approaching wild, but an appreciable fruity tang. the flavor matches the nose, its not as sweet as it smells, bready, maybe maltier than it smells too, still fruity, i get apple again, maybe from the yeast. perhaps not as rich and complex as some, but the alcohol is equally well hidden, and its still somewhat layered. there is an odd tannic white wine thing here, doesnt really fit, and i dont all the way love it. belgian yeast lacks that high tone estery thing, just soft fruits and spices. very light on the palate and well carbonated. in the end this was my least favorite of logsdon beers we had in hood river, it doesnt really fit the style parameters very well, and has some unique textures to it that im not in love with. still, well made and interesting beer, forcing contemplation. what did other people think of this oddity?

On-tap at Hops Hill, Brooklyn, NY

A: The beer is hazy brownish red in color. It poured with a collar of beige bulbuls around the edge of the glass and some lacing on the surface.
S: Light to moderate aromas of burnt grains and candi sugars are present in the nose.
T: The taste follows the smell, having flavors of candi sugars and notes of cherries with notes of Belgian yeast and hints of oak.
M: It feels medium- to full-bodied on the palate and has a moderate amount of carbonation.
O: This is a nice quadrupel that has Belgian notes of candi sugars and burnt caramel. No traces of alcohol are perceptible in the taste.
