Spontané Syrah is a rosé-inspired addition to our Spontané series featuring Syrah grapes from the Garnier Vineyard in beautiful Mosier, OR. A simple wort of Mt. Hood water, Pilsner malt, saw wheat, and aged hops is boiled at length, then cooled and inoculated overnight in our koelschip loft before fermentation and aging in French oak barrels. The beer is comprised of 1-year old casks aged for 6 months on 2017 Syrah grapes blended with 2-year old casks aged on spent Syrah from 2016's harvest of the same vineyard block.

Amber tinted rose clear body, no head. Grape must, oak, grape skins, vinous notes, barnyard funk, and slight flowers in the nose. Taste matches the nose with some playful acidity, funk starts out with a roar but dies down to a whine, or perhaps I should say wine with the huge vinous and grape finish. Dried berries percolate in the background. Feel is more mild than others in the series, almost juicy with the grape and wine at time, but still an elegant sipper.

A: The beer is relatively clear dark rosé in color and has little to any visible carbonation. It poured with a collar consisting of medium-sized white bubbles around the edge of the glass.
S: Moderate aromas of blackberries, grapes, and peppery spices are present in the nose.
T: The taste follows the smell and is a bit sour with flavors of Syrah grapes along with a touch of wood from the barrel aging.
M: It feels light- to medium-bodied and rather tart on the palate with a low amount of carbonation.
O: This beer had a delicate blend of sourness and funk to accompany the flavors of Syrah grapes.

an awesome beer, and a brilliant idea for a beer, i love how varietal specific this is to syrah, identifiable immediately as such, not just a red wine grape beer, but a particular expression of syrah, really cool! it was a pricey little bottle, but well worth if for this level of complexity and process intensiveness. pink and hazy in the glass, some grapey looking sediment at the bottom, and no head at all. this is close to still, a unique color so still a pretty beer, but me and the dude i shared it with both wanted more carbonation, i feel like the texture held the beer back a little bit, and it made the sourness seem too much in the throat on each sip, it even burned a little without anything there to push it along. i really love the aroma and flavor through, it smells super woody, mature, and wild, very much a lambic complexion to the fermentation profile, truly wild to me, with nuances of tart cranberry and raspberry in there from the grapes, syrah wine of course too. the flavor is equally funky, super sour, and has cherry and raspberry essences as well, even a rose hip floral thing, tons of tannins from the fruit, and a nice woody funk. very complex beer really, mouthwatering and interesting and unique, i just wish it had a little more life to it, which is the only thing i would change. its always a treat to get to drink beers from these guys, and this one was awesome, a standout from a killer session. spendy, but i feel it was worth it.
