Lightly smoked Helles Lager, brewed with Oregon State Homebrewer Of The Year Russel Berger. Inspired by Aecht Schlenkerla Helles Lagerbier. Classic Pilsner malt profile and Bavarian yeast strain balanced by Smaragd hops and 10% beechwood smoked malt. Prost!

16 fl oz pull-tab can:

"Smoked helles lager." 5% ABV.

Served chilled into a Paulaner stangenglas.

While the smoke flavour is rather light and a bit insipid inasmuch as smoke goes with its neutral beechwood, the underlying helles lager is downright fantastic, boasting impressive depth of Munich malt and pale malt/2-row flavour replete with concomitant crispness. A biteen grassy, but otherwise there's no real hop character. Crisp, dry, refreshing, delicious.

A stupidly drinkable helles lager and one of the better expressions of the styles I've had despite coming from an American brewery. Who knew Logsdon could throw down with the likes of Live Oak, Great Lakes, or New Glarus when it came to American stabs at traditional German styles?

16 oz. can. Clear golden. Smells of doughy bread, light herbals, and some light smoke wood aromas. Tastes smoke right up front. Spicy hops with a little grass. Biscuit malt. Smoke is strongest and meatiest in the back end with some mineral notes in the finish. Medium light and a touch seltzery. Flavorful, but could use a bit more malt to balance that mineral flavor in the finish. Makes it have a harsh bitter, spicy, and smokey lingering flavor.

16oz can purchased at Community Pint, in Spokane, Washington, for $3.49. According to the stamp on the bottom of the can, this was canned on October 21st 2020, and it's from batch number 103.

Poured into a tallboy glass, this was a dark golden color, with pretty good clarity. About an inch of off-white foam was present, initially, but fell away somewhat quickly. Spotty lace.

Herbal, mildly grassy hoppiness and a light smokiness greet the nose.

Herbal, grassy hop flavor up front, with the smoked malts mostly kicking in afterwards, about midway through the taste, and are fairly restrained. Finishes slightly dry.

Crisp mouthfeel, although the body is a tad too heavy for the styl

An interesting idea that doesn't quite work for me. It's drinkable, and even fairly refreshing, but 16oz is enough for me, on account of the smokiness doesn't really meld all that well with otherwise herbal dryness of the beer.

A: The beer is crystal clear golden yellow in color and has a moderate amount of visible carbonation. It poured with a short white head that left a narrow collar around the edge of the glass.
S: Light to moderate aromas of smoked malts are present in the nose.
T: The taste follows the smell and is dominated by flavors of smoked malts, although these are subdued compared to a raunchier.
M: It feels nearly medium-bodied and very clean on the palate with a moderate amount of carbonation. There is a touch of dryness in the finish.
O: The smoked malts definitely make this a unique lager that isn't nearly as smoky compared to rauchbiers and has the drinkability of a hell's.

Revisited May 09th 2021 - serving temperature 59° F

Original November 06th, 2020 ratings: 3.75 3.5 3.75 3.75

The look remains the same; thin head yet with great retention, thick and creamy in texture. Richer smell, nothing vegetal; light smoked wood presence. The taste presents more smoke character, too; malty with a rich graininess; slight yet evenly dispersed hop bitterness. The mouthfeel seems the same.

I like the bolder smokiness this go around. It's not intense or overbearing, but definitely there, whereas the first time I tried the beer, it bordered on being imperceptible.

CANNED ON 10/21/2020 BATCH #103

----------

Medium gold colored body; excellent carbonation; one-finger thick head, white and sticky. Faint notes of smoke in the aroma with a touch of vegetal notes. (initially); mild malt presence after a few minutes. Trace of wood ash in the taste; lightly toasted grain; medium strength hop bitterness. Medium-light body; crisp with a touch of grainy warmth.

A decent lager but barely any smoked malt presence. The smell really lacks oomph, and the taste is more of a standard German pilsner or kellerbier than anything else. Good but far from distinctive or great.

At the Crosscut Taproom in Castle Rock WA.
Nothing too wrong with this beer, but nothing exceptional. Plenty of very well done German lagers around here.

Yes, yes, yes! A Rauch Helles from Logsdon!? Stunning. Crisp and biscuity with just a touch of beechwood smoke. It's perfectly balanced, subtle, and delicious. All day every day beer right here. Prost!
