16oz can, adhesive label. No dating information found.
Ruby brown colored body. Brief lasting light tan head, leaving a full ring. No lacing.
Aroma of roasted malts, chocolate, and spicy rye whiskey barrel.
Taste is dominated by the spicy rye whiskey, and exudes vapors into the nasal passages. Additional flavors of chocolate, oak, raisin, and touches of vanilla and black licorice. A whiff of smokiness, but really this is a sweet brew experience. Low bitterness. The rye whiskey barrel continues its clout in the aftertaste.
More than medium mouthfeel. Mouth coating, but with a drying finish (because of the higher ABV%). Supportive carbonation.
A porter with spicy rye notes.

I bought this one without looking at any ratings or reviews because I enjoy rye and rye barrel aging and because my experience with this brewery albeit limited has been overwhelmingly positive. I see its score has been diminished by one particularly unenthused reviewer but happily I enjoyed this one quite a bit. As soon as I cracked the can I knew I’d be happy as the aromas fairly burst forth bringing on assertive whiskey and chocolate notes. Those are the primary palate characteristics too. It’s a lighter bodied beer dominated by rye whiskey and wood, mild sweetness and dark chocolate, some vague hoppy bitterness on the finish, and suggestions of cola, coffee, vanilla, wood, and cocoa powder.

Carbonation is modest but present and again this is a thin bodied beer sort of in the central waters mold. I appreciated the dry finish and utter lack of any stickiness or flab. Metamorphosis is definitely dominated by the whiskey barrel and some might say, to a fault. I’d say you’ve been warned! Go elsewhere if that’s not your jam, I dug it.

Pours a near black with ruby tints on the edges; light, brief 1" tan head with little retention and lacing. Nose is Australian licorice, dark rum, dark fruit, vanilla, cola, and some booze. Mildly astringent. Palate is salty licorice, booze, soy sauce. Mouthfeel is on the thin side with almost no carbonation. Forgettable.

Very dark with not much of a head. Pretty aroma: caramel, rye & malted grain. Slightly sweet. Flavors are pretty much what was implied, caramel, rye & malted grain. Medium, thin feel with enough alcohol & carbonation to occupy the tongue. Doesn’t feel like 11.2 %. An excellent porter.
