I tasted this black ale with a slight frothy head to it while having a small lamb sandwich and potato slices at Eataly's Birreria yesterday. Listed as having chestnuts and dark fruits in the mash, I enjoyed its low abv (4-4.5) and the light to medium bodied ale with thoughts I could easily drink this all night. The aromas of nuts, coffee, and chocolate conspired to make this a very good pairing with the lamb.

Overall, this was a nut brown "session ale" and one that I would be proud serve anytime.

A: pours a very dark brown/black, nearly completely opaque. Tons of thick & fluffy white head with good retention and strong lace.

S: big roasted malts, hops, booze, earthy notes too. Stout-y and interesting.

T: strong roasted malts to start off, bitter coffee and booze follow behind. Finishes slightly boozy and dry, much like a Scotch ale. Strongly hopped throughout; incredibly complex for a brown ale. And fortunately, all of the flavors here balance well. Do brown ales get better than this?

M: full-bodied and ULTRA creamy right out of the cask. I was honestly speechless at how creamy it was. Perfection!

D: in true DFH style, it's quite easy to drink. Dangerously easy, given the price point.

Brown ales are typically boring and bland, but this is *hands down* the most interesting (and best) brown ale I've ever tasted. Sure it's overpriced at $10/pint, but absolutely worth trying if you get the chance. Bravo to Sam & crew!

Notes: ratings are relative to the style, but honestly this is a fantastic brew.
