Drank from a cask at La Birreria, New York, NY
Served in a tumbler
Very dark brown in appearance. The liquid was topped by a thin, short-lived film of light tan bubbles.
Coffee notes came through strong in the nose. Good dose of caramel, chocolate and toasted malts. Slightly roasty. Hints of vanilla were detectible as well.
The flavor profile was quite interesting. Italian roast coffee was most noticeable. (Coffee was definitely stronger on the palate than in the nose.) Lots of rich chocolate and roasted malt notes. The finish was slightly bitter and contained just a touch of smoke.
Regardless of the style, I often find cask ales to be disappointingly thin and watery, but this example had a decent amount of heft to it. Also, because this beer had a bit more carbonation than a typical cask ale, the mouthfeel was surprisingly creamy.
Of the three house-made beers available at La Birreria, this one sounded the most interesting. At $10 a glass, I probably would not try this again, but I am glad I gave it a shot. As the saying goes, when in Rome...

Very spot on for a robust porter style when fresh from the cask. Roasty, tingly, slightly ginger -y but well blended. As it warmed, however, things turned for the worse. Coffee flavor dropped off, many imperfections surfaced, and it became obvious that this $10 Barista cask ale was not worth its cost.
Again, more coffee as it was cooler, but after warming this was a letdown.
