After getting through the packaging (which required a knife to remove the black plastic cover on top and then a bottle opener to remove the cap) this was poured from a 33cl bottle into a tulip.
A – Pale, murky golden colour with some yeast deposits. Delicate head on top with just a touch of lacing.
S – Sweet and yeasty. Plenty of wheat and honey.
T – Surprisingly bitter at first taste. Slightly sour at the back of the mouth. Not sure what the IBU rating for this would be but it's certainly much more bitter than it appears. Some sweeter apple and lemon coming through underneath. The head is still somewhat creamy which helps to balance out the bitterness a little and there is an ever so slight dose of something resembling herbs. As it warms some of the honey overtones start to come through which kills off the sourness. It also takes on a much more citric vibe with some pear adding to the lemon.
M – Spicy on the tongue. The sourness is fading as it warms but is still present. Sour and bitter
O – An odd combination. You can definitely get the sensation of what they were trying to do in creating a golden ale but it hasn't quite worked out – the sourness & bitterness are just too strong. A good attempt at this style but needs a lot more work, unfortunately even ignoring the faults the flavours here just aren't strong enough on their own.
