Courtesy of Lily my Bulgarian colleague who brought this beer from Sofia, this Dark ("Тъмно", or "Tumno") lager comes in a 500ml can, BB 22/03/09, served chilled in a weizen glass.

A: pours a dark coke-brown colour, with mahogany hues when seen against light; the dark tan frothy head retains its body extremely well. Looking beautiful.
S: quite like a stout (Irish Dry Stout, actually), featuring lightly roasted malts and dark jammy plums, added with decent sourness of a well-lagered bier. A swirl gives rise to the sour-sweet edge of a German Helles Lager, black sugar, and aromatic, lightly-toasted dark malts.
T: moderately herbally-bitter from the beginning, backed by a decent level of sourness, then the roasty-bitter edge of roast malts takes over, rendering a moderate, decently lingering bitter and dry finish. Quite integrated on the flavour, like a clean German Schwarzbier with added bitterness.
M&D: fizzy throughout, light-bodied, easy to quaff but not quite interesting as far as complexity or flavour is concerned. Still, my sincere gratitude goes to Lily my friend!

Holy shit, it's a stout... in Bulgaria!

Appearance: Poured from the 1L bottle into a 300mL glass. The beer is black with dark brown notes coming in through the edges. Head is light brown, 1 finger thick, and sticks around for maybe half a minute.

Smell: Hello old friend - milk chocolatey notes dominating with a smooth caramelly backbone. Some coffe hanging around, toffee. Overall a pretty sweet smelling beer, if a bit mild.

Taste: Starts with a solid, semisweet chocolate note. Midpalate is light and creamy with a nice sweetness. Finish is roasted with light hints od earth and caramel. Good all around.

Mouthfeel: A bit carbonated/prickly up front, but nice and smooth in the back. Medium body.

Notes: Best beer I've had in Bulgaria up to this point. The "tumnos" (dark beers) are great, but I don't understand how they don't put stuff like this out more consistently. The lighter beers here are worse than your average Euro pales, but these winter seasonals can definitely hang. I'll be picking this one up again for sure.
