Wrecking Bar Brewpub "Barrel Aged Ye Olde Sprinklerhead"
500 mL brown glass bottle, capped and waxed. "Bottled: Dec '23"
Notes via stream of consciousness: Unfortunately I've disturbed the bottle and it's poured a cloudy brown - my bad on that so I'll have to adjust my score accordingly. However, the head retention isn't great. A small amount of tan foam formed towards the end of the pour and then dropped into a collar before completely fading away. That's not too uncommon with a beer of 12.5% but it probably should be better. In the nose it's malty with notes of golden and medium caramel, soft chocolate fudge, and some alcohol. The taste is much, much fuller. I'm getting milk chocolate, raisin, brown sugar, both black and red currant, Bourbon, oak, alcohol, some leafy hops, and a suggestion of coconut. It's sweet upfront but not too sweet, and the alcohol and bitterness wipe it clean in the end. In the mouth it's medium-full in body and gently crisp. The moderate carbonation is good because it doesn't really need any additional acidity from C02, and historically English barleywines would have been on the lower end. I think the balance is great, and although the alcohol is a bit on the clearer side it's not burning or off in anyway (i.e. higher alcohols); and to be honest I think it's coming from the residual Bourbon in the barrel rather than the fermentation anyway. It's a sipper, for sure, and as such I like a bit of alcohol in it. Nicely done.
