served on tap in a snifter glass, 1/7/13

A: Dark brown in color with significant lacing.

S: Deep roasted notes, some subtle dark fruit notes, brown sugar, and an overall light boozy sweetness.

T: Starts with a slight woody smoke and quickly evolves into a very rich roast and malt profile. Big hops and roasted malts make sure not much sweetness lingers on the palate. Overall a dark baker's chocolate covers the palate with a lingering well rounded roast.

M: nice mouthfeel, nothing left desired but shy of perfect.

O: A world class imperial stout. I believe this batch has lingered for a while and I think time has proven to be a friend in the development of the complexities. The development is nice through the beer and I'm definitely looking forward to future vintages.

Re-review with new batch (1/2/13):
A: Pours pitch black with a finger of dense dark tan head. Retention is impressive. This is a beautiful beer.

S: Strong roasted malts and dark chocolate. Caramel sweetness in the background helps to balance this beer.

T: Roasted malts are quite strong in this beer, but dark chocolate is not far behind with a nice caramel sweetness to help balance. Hop bitterness is also quite strong, ensuring the beer never becomes overly sweet.

M: Medium to thick mouthfeel with creamy carbonation.

O: This is a great RIS. Strong roasted malts and dark chocolate along with a caramel sweetness to balance. There has been one batch that was quite a bit sweeter, though, and I preferred that one. I thought it brought out more complexity.
