Wrecking Bar Brewpub "Old Man Clemens Smoked Helles Lager"
16 fl. oz. can, "Canned: 10.23". Sampled on 02.28.2026
Notes via stream of consciousness: A clear light-golden body is capped by a good sized head of bright white foam. The Beechwood smoke is clear in the flavor atop a sweetish malt base. The taste, not surprisingly, follows. The smoke is at a perfect level, present enough that it's easily recognized, and yet not so strong that it distracts from sweetish and grainy malt. I will note, however, that it's stronger than the smokiness that I've had in some of the helles that I've tasted in Bamberg, the city known for their smoked beers - but I found those a little bit lacking. This is on par with the best beers from Schlenkerla, Spezial, and Fässla. The bitterness is balancing, somewhere around 20 IBUs, and it finishes lightly sweet and smokey. To finish up, the body is medium-light and the carbonation is slightly restrained leaving it smooth and lightly creamy. I'm definitely impressed and wish I had more than just one more can.

We love reviews (150 characters or more)! Check out: How to Review a Beer. You don't need to get fancy. Drop some thoughts on the beer's attributes (look, smell, taste, feel) plus your overall impression. Something that backs up your rating and helps others. Thanks!
