On tap at the brewery into a snifter
A: Pours pitch black with just a ring of head, no retention really at all.
S: Tons of sweet caramelly bourbon with licorice, molasses, dark chocolate, and toffee. A bit of roasted malt, but not much. Intense, pleasant.
T: Lots of toffee sweetness mixed with dark chocolate, coconut, molasses, and a good amount of bitter hoppiness. Bourbon is very present and also pleasant. The balance between sweetness and bitterness is nearly perfect. Roast is there, but way in the background - a minor complaint. Booze is fairly strong.
M: Medium to thick bodied with low, creamy carbonation.
O: This beer is fantastic. Intensely flavorful, well balanced, great bourbon flavor, with a great stout base. The base beer was a bit too bitter and dry for me, but this beer is far sweeter. Maybe they tweaked the recipe, maybe the age and barrel balanced it out. Either way, this is the best beer Wrecking Bar has brewed so far. With a bit of age, I think this beer would mellow out a bit more and would be even better.
EDIT: Apparently the FG on the batch used for this beer is significantly higher than the last batch of the base beer. The added sweetness improves the balance in my opinion.
