a bourbon barrel aged belgian quad and a very good one. there is plenty of whiskey here, vanilla and caramel and sweetness, but its not so much that it overpowers the nuances of the base beer, which is also rather robust in its own right. i like the belgian yeast still coming through, some nice warming dried fruitiness and spice, raisin and cherry and cola notes, light mulling spices. maple and toffee sweetness from the malts are nice with the fruitiness, and the body isnt too heavy for this to be drinkable for what it is. i like the mild oak here, more whiskey than wood, which i think helps the quad remain mostly in tact even with the barrel ageing. smooth and rich evolution of flavors, lots going on here but overall a very cohesive brew, the barrel doesnt take over. some alcohol warmth in the finish but this isnt hot, clove spice and cranberry and some wintery vibes round it out. overall a really nice beer from a brewery i had never heard of before this one. very professionally done, reserved in the right ways. nice this time of year!
