64 oz growler filled @ Flix Brewhouse. This is the 5.50% version of Selvatica, part of Flix's Funkhouse series.
Served less than a week after filling into a tulip.
HEAD: None whatsoever. No lacing.
BODY: Dark semitransparent copper of average vibrance. No yeast/sediment is visible within. Translucent. Appears undercarbonated.
Looks pretty mundane overall for a sour ale. Not unique or special in any regard.
AROMA: Peach. Floral hops. A kiss of lactobacillus bacteria-induced sourness. Suggests a mildly sour beer - maybe a 3/10 in terms of sourness. Fruitskin. Neutral (Belgian pale? 2-row?) malts. Slightly acidic.
A pleasant aroma of below average strength.
No overt yeasty or off-notes are detectable. No overt booze.
TASTE: Smacky 3/10 sourness. Neutral malts. Fruitskin. A hint of peach.
It's pretty mellow. Balanced but reticent, lacking impressive depth of flavour.
Flavour duration and intensity are average.
Not at all an intricate or subtle brew - particularly for this style. But I do like it.
TEXTURE: Smooth, wet, lightly acidic, a biteen smacky. Light-bodied. Flat.
Suits the taste okay, I guess. Fails to elevate the beer as a whole or to complement any flavours all that well. Save for the acidity, it doesn't seem geared towards this beer's specific flavour profiel.
OVERALL: A passable sour from a little-known local brewery. Doesn't warrant much attention given how average it is. That said, it's damn drinkable for a sour ale and I'll enjoy working my way through the growler.
C+ (3.15) / ABOVE AVERAGE
