i believe this one was actually brewed at their frisco location, although perhaps multiple spots are doing it simultaneously, and also is a recent naba medal winner, a nice example of the style, unique on the smoke front to me, nicely lagered, robust for being this low in abv, and really pretty assertive on the smoke too, delicious, although way more fall than summer to me. rather deep amber mahogany color here, frothy tan head, looks well refined with a nice luster. the nose is strong, campfire first, but then also more deep wet earth, seems at once ancient and fresh, and there are great malt layers evident, iodine and minerals, biscuit and bread crust, raisin and fig, essential german character, but its the smoke that dominates, almost texas barbeque meets more familiar alderwood type malt, very cool. the flavor is layered and robust too, just short of being astringent from the intensity, bit there is some seemingly smoke derived bitterness, i think it balances some of the sweeter grain so it fits, definite raisin fruitiness, lightly sweet and spicy on the back end, maple and brown sugar, toffee, black pepper, clove, and warming smoke, still identifiable as a lager too. this is really good, deserved to be recognized, true to style but also unique enough to stand out. dont know much about flix at all, but this is well done!
