At long last, the CANportunity has finally arisen for me to do a brewery horizontal with South County B.C. & potentially close the book on them. I am sure that they mean well, but I have had far and away too many of their CANs that have either pooched out or exploded altogether. The CANQuest (tm) is not interested in babysitting a beer in the hopes of keeping it together. Once I run through this lot, I will disCANtinue buying their beers.
From the CAN: "Experiment * Learn * Repeat Intervals Brewing Research Series"; "Learn with Us"; "Pour Into a Glass for Best Drinking Experience".
This one was one of the aforementioned poochers & needed some help in its opening. I Crack!ed open the vent & when nothing untoward occurred, I CANtinued by beginning a slow, gentle C-Line Glug into the awaiting glass. It quickly became apparent that clarity was out of the question so I allowed it to flow a bit more freely, causing it to form two-plus fingers of dense, foamy, rocky, bone-white head with very good retention. Color was a deeply-hazy/lightly-cloudy Yellow-Gold (SRM = 4 - 5). Nose was very much of melons - CANtaloupe & honeydew. Mouthfeel was medium. The taste was oddly different with not only the melon flavors, but also tropical fruits, like mango & guava, plus there was an earthiness, like something my neighbor had freshly picked from her garden with a peppery spiciness. Very earthy & very green, no doubt. Hmm. I might have taken it for a wet-hopped AIPA, but it was a different type of earthiness. Here, it was acCANponied by a spiciness that does not generally occur in that type of beer. Hmm. It made me want to whip up something with a Southwestern quality in either one of my crock pots or in a casserole dish. I have really gotten back into cooking since the COVID-19 quarantine beCAN & this beer was at least inspirational. Finish was dry with an earthy spicy, fruity mélange of flavors that was tough to quantify, but was rather satisfying. YMMV.
