At long last, the CANportunity has finally arisen for me to do a brewery horizontal with South County B.C. & potentially close the book on them. I am sure that they mean well, but I have had far and away too many of their CANs that have either pooched out or exploded altogether. The CANQuest (tm) is not interested in babysitting a beer in the hopes of keeping it together. Once I run through this lot, I will disCANtinue buying their beers. This one gets a double-whammy in that a) it slightly pooched before I could get it into the reefer & b) it CANmemorates a local small-owned business with whom I have cut all ties due to p**s-poor customer service practices & exorbitantly high prices. Bump The Fridge! Bump South County!

From the CAN: "The Fridge India Pale Ale"; "Pour Into a Glass for Best Drinking Experience."

I am going to try VERY hard to refrain from being snarky here, but the CANbination of brewer & venue leaves me Kelvin-cold.

I might have done some in-CAN agitation, except for that pooch. I figured that if things were calm as the result of having sat bolt-upright in my reefer, then why tempt fate? It actually foamed beautifully to form two-plus fingers of dense, foamy, rocky, bone-white head with very good retention. Color was a deeply-hazy/lightly-cloudy Straw-Yellow (SRM = > 2, < 4). Nose was highly tropical with notes dominated by pineapple, but including papaya, guava & mango. Mmm. Mouthfeel was medium. The taste remained highly tropical, but there was also a pleasant bitterness to offset the usual sweetness that I get in other examples of the style. I was finding this to be eminently drinkable as a result. Finish was semi-dry to dry & while it made for a pleasant interlude, I will not be returning to it, for reasons as delineated previously. YMMV.

Appearance - The beer poured a hazy banana yellow color with a white head.

Smell - The nose was grassy orange, very hop forward.

Taste - The beer was initially grassy with orange rind and light resin. Though the initial is somewhat bold, the finish is lightly bitter. In sum, it didn’t really finish well.

Mouthfeel - A good unfiltered IPA should have viscosity like this.

Overall - This is a more bitter NE IPA than I am accustomed too. It’s solid, but not elite.

On tap at the brewery. Looooong story on this one. A co-worker scored a 4-pack at The Fridge in Lancaster a few days ago. She was kind enough to share with 3 of us, one apiece. So I carefully placed my can in the fridge at home and went to an evening meeting, anticipating a leisurely tasting upon my return.
Not gonna happen. When I got home, The Fridge was a dead soldier next to the pool table in the basement. WTF.
So we have a few minor league baseball players living with us during the season, and they had a night off. One of them apparently ran out of Bud Light at some point during the evening and went scrounging in the fridge and found ...The Fridge. Argh. I couldn't decide whether to kill somebody or cry. So I drank a South County Stellar Phase and went to bed a sadder but wiser man.
The following day the dog and I did our weekly beer run to South County (about 20 miles one way). I harbored a long-shot hope that they had kept a can or two of Fridge in the back room or something, but no such luck. They still had a sixtel, but hadn't tapped it yet. So I bought a couple of 4-packs of their other excellent offerings and headed home. The dog was happy, anyway.
Late that evening, I checked their web site and OMG The Fridge was listed as on tap. They don't do growlers at South County (it's a QC thing), so the only option was to run back down there and try one at the bar. Too damn late and I wasn't going to drive to Fawn Grove TWICE in one day (many people don't get to Fawn Grove twice in a lifetime), so I waited until this afternoon. And yes, it was still on tap. And yes, it was worth the hassle. A quintessential NEIPA - juicy, hazy, fruity, soft, with a wonderful mouthfeel and enough alcohol to get your attention but not enough to render you useless for the rest of the day. Really, really good. I'd go back tomorrow for another one, but the sixtel kicked.
I just hope they make this an annual event. Very, very good.
