20oz pint at the brewpub in Canmore. Aaaah, Aussie accents in the service sector in the Rockies, it's been too long!

This beer appears a murky, dark red-brick amber colour, with a skinny cap of wispy, and barely bubbly off-white head, which leaves little beyond a few instances of ocean spout lace around the glass as it slowly recedes.

It smells of semi-sweet, bready caramel malt, suggestions of besotted raisins, other muddled black orchard fruit, soft earthy yeast, and plain weedy, leafy hops. The taste is grainy caramel malt, candied toffee, mixed and matched dark fruit, mildly phenolic yeast, a slight biscuity edge, and low-key earthy, leafy hops.

The carbonation is quite active in its swirling frothiness, the body a decent middleweight, and generally smooth, just a wee yeasty intransigence mucking about. It finishes off-dry, the biscuity character growing as it warms, almost counteracting the fruity and weak boozy notes.

Not a bad Belgian style 'strong' ale, the yeast and fruitiness hallmarks well hit upon. What isn't, however, is the expected complexity of such an offering - the mustiness and a bit more elevated alcohol really starting to be conspicuous by their absence, the deeper I get into this.
