1L howler from the Sherbrooke Liquor store - apparently, the same pale ale (I verified with the brewery) that I added a couple years ago couldn't (or wouldn't) be merged with this one. So be it.

This beer pours a clear, medium copper amber colour, with three fingers of puffy, loosely foamy, and fairly bubbly ecru head, which leaves some crazy sudsy coral reef arch lace around the glass as it quickly abates.

It smells of semi-sweet, bready and pastry-friendly caramel malt, mixed pome and sugary citrus fruity esters, a touch of hard water flintiness, and more earthy, leafy, and sort of perfumed floral hop bitters. The taste is softly biscuity, bready, and doughy caramel malt, a separate pale graininess, mild generic citrus rind, musty leafy and piney green hop bitters, and some further ethereal floral mountain path notes.

The carbonation is fairly tame in its barely supportive frothiness, the body a solid middleweight, and generally smooth, the otherwise game hops perhaps knowing when to keep their cool, as such. It finishes off-dry, the sturdy base malt continuing to entertain the lingering citrusy and floral-forward green-ass hoppiness.

Overall, this is a very well made Yankee-style pale ale, with a mountain flower character that melds well enough with the standard citrus and piney west coast ideal. Easy to drink, and essentially sessionable, what with the much more boozy offerings out there now ignorantly claiming that metric as their own. Worth seeking out for the Alberta beer lover in you, IMHO.

Poured from a growler.

Appearance - Pours a light amber with two fingers of bubbly white head.

Smell - citrus and piney hops, bready caramel malts, hint of pine resin, and hint of grapefruit peel.

Taste - Citrus and piney hops upfront followed by the bready caramel malts. The hint of pine resin and grapefruit peel help to round out the brew.

Mouthfeel - Medium bodied with moderate carbonation. Finishes off dry with a lingering bitterness.

Overall - An APA that delivers on all fronts. The hops and malts are on par for the style. This is a winner from Grizzly Paw. One of their best brews to date.
