650ml, black wax capped bottle (2016 Cellar Series) - aged for an unspecified amount of time, in unspecified Tequila barrels. Specifically. Because the Rocky Mountains just scream out 'Mexico!'.
This beer pours a murky, dark orange-brick brown colour, with four fingers of puffy, loosely foamy, and bubbly tan head, which leaves some decent dissolving blob lace around the glass as it lazily sinks out of sight.
It smells of gritty and bready caramel malt, some prominent herbal and woodsy Tequila barrel notes, brown sugar syrup, some under yer parents' basement stairs mustiness, and very tame earthy, leafy, and floral noble hop bitters. The taste is grainy and doughy caramel malt, a lesser biscuity toffee thing, some lessened green and estery Tequila boozy oakiness, muddled domestic citrus and pome fruity notes, and more weedy, leafy, and sauced-up floral verdant hoppiness.
The carbonation is adequate in its palate-preserving frothiness, the body a solid medium weight, and actually fairly smooth, as just a wee bit of the barrel treatment comes through at this juncture. It finishes off-dry, the base barleywine starting to reclaim its rightful place in this affair (BIL!).
Overall - this is a pleasant enough sidestep to this brewer's 'regular' offering, as such, with the herbaceous alcohol character of the Tequila wood interesting, but in the end, not particularly winsome. Still a grand brew, IMHO, as the near 21-proof wowee sauce contingent is 'muy silencioso', if I got that right. Worth checking out, er, I mean investing in.
