650ml bottle - part of their #622 Main Street Series. 'Refreshing, effervescent, and a bit opinionated'. Wait, whut?
This beer pours a mostly clear, medium golden yellow colour, with two zaftig fingers of puffy, loosely foamy, and fairly bubbly off-white head, which leaves some splendid old-growth treeline lace around the glass as it quickly sinks out of sight.
It smells of gritty and grainy cereal malt, some apple/pear skin fruitiness, a further toasted white cracker thing, musty and yet spicy yeasty esters, and tame earthy, herbal, and gently lit-up floral hop bitters. The taste is bready and doughy caramel malt, some mixed red berry and citrus fruity notes, candi sugar, kind of laid-back Belgian yeast, and more understated leafy, musty, and floral green hoppiness.
The carbonation is adequate in its structurally supportive frothiness, the body a decent middleweight, and sort of smooth, as a sneaky, underlying boozy essence drags things down just a bit here. It finishes off-dry, the sweetness of the malt, frooty character, and sidling alcohol the order of the lingering day.
Overall - this comes across as a well-made version of the style, with the sweetness quotient duly moderated, and the elevated ABV noticeable, sure, but to no great extent. Good stuff, but yeah, well, that's just, like, my opinion, man!
