from a purely quality standpoint, you will be hard pressed to find an objectively better made stout than this one, its artfully crafted, unique, and just on point. it has about as much flavor and richness as one could conceivably imagine in a beer so low in alcohol too, really awesomely smooth and fluffy feeling for how low dose it is. it simply must be packed with oats, i get more of that kind of sweetness than i do from any lactose that might be present, i am more inclined to call this an oatmeal stout than a milk or sweet stout, especially considering the chocolate component is a combination of cocoa powder and dark unsweetened chocolate, never sweet milk chocolate at all, but more flavorful than just nibs tend to be too, and not so bitter, really integrated well and smoothed out amazingly well by the starchy sweet oats that make this so velvety and distinct. i swear i almost get a light mint thing to this, there is a very mild botanical element in there with the chocolate, maybe a reaction with whatever hops are present, but this doesnt taste at all hoppy to me, i like it, whatever it is. so smooth and big feeling, but dry as it finishes, not super bitter or deeply roasty either, just right. a superbly well built oatmeal stout, the chocolate is complimentary and not at all too much. a real delicious beer, as good as any from perennial.
