RBESG 2016 in Barcelona. Shared bottle at Lambicus. Dark brown colour. Fairly oaky aroma and flavour, appears less sweet than the ordinary St. Bernardus Abt 12.

2015 Vintage
750ml cork and cage bottle poured into a snifter
A- pours brown in color with a ruby hue, one-finger foamy off-white head has good retention after the pour
S- malty brown breads and dark fruit on the nose; figs, prunes raisins and fruit cake. Undertones of brown sugar, caramel, peppery yeast that gives a clove note. as well as some phenolic notes. The barrel is controlled, adding brandy and ripe red apple notes.
T- the barrel immediately as a 'bright' note to the beer, compared to the non barreled version. Fruit and lively up front with flavors of raisins, figs, ripe pear and red apples. Mid-palate gives light oak, as well as brown bread and fruit cake. The finish is slightly peppery and phenolic with a clove note. Lingers of apples, pears and caramel
M- medium body with moderate carbonation leads to a foamy mouthfeel that continues into a slightly warming finish
O- the barrel treatment seems to open up the fruity notes, compared to the base beer. I think I prefer the original, but this was very good.

750ml bottle into a matching chalice appears hazy chestnut with minimal head formation.
Aroma of apple and pear. Some sugary date and raison aspect emerges as it breathes.
Taste is apple and pear with faint clove phenolics and slight earthiness. Some herbal bitterness, raisons and neutral alcohol. Molasses with musty oak aftertaste.
Medium in body with light carbonation. Initial impression is that this isnt even barrel aged but luckily more nuance emerges as it warms. The alcohol is hidden very well. Decent but honestly no better than the base beer.
