St. Bernardus Abt 12 is widely regarded as one of the best beers in the world. It is therefore no surprise that it is our brewery’s flagship beer, ranked at the very top of the St. Bernardus beer hierarchy. It is brewed in the classic quadrupel style and adheres to the original 1946 recipe.

A 11.2 oz “Euro weenie” bottle poured into a Belgium glass chalice.

Appearance - A slightly hazy, reddish brown ale. A dense, tan colored head that dissipates after a bit. No lacing to speak of.

Nose - Strawberries. Slightly smoky. Alcohol. I touch of that funky Belgian nose.

Taste - Sweet. Malty. Again, strawberries (am I the only one picking up on this?). Tart. Mild Belgian yeast flavor. The hops are barely noticeable.

Mouth - Smooth yet fizzy (as odd as that sounds).

Overall - The best beer in the world? I’m not sure about that but it is tasty. Despite the big malt, big alcohol, and funky Belgian yeast, this ale is surprisingly smooth and enjoyable.

Exceptionally well crafted. 10% ABV drinks so smooth. Mouthfeel is right on target. Makes me wish that the bottle contained the ‘missing’ 0.8 fl. oz. (Europe!!).

Not going to break this review down by all of the ‘standard’ criteria (there’s plenty of other reviews for that). Final word: treat yourself to this one at least once a year.

At my lady Pamela's house; bottled and slightly chilled, 330mL in a pint glass. From The Roundhouse Centre LCBO on Howard Ave. in nearby Windsor. My 2nd beer from the Poperinge, Belgium brewery, and 1st for 2026. Radically appreciated by Gracie the cat...

I drank a 65F Tripel before drinking this, because I wanted to see the difference. Stark difference. It is closer to a dark stout than a Tripel. The color of Coca-Cola. I do not know how to say this.... you know how Elvis and Chuck Berry and others invented Rock N Roll? Well, it's kinda like that. These Belgian monks invented it, so you have to respect them as demi-Gods just for that, But modern microbreweries make stuff a billion times better, on so many levels. If you are in the mood to have an "Old-Skool Nite" with the homeboys watching a game, yeah it's cool. But if you are into Tripels and basically stouts, America actually makes the best on earth. I know that is sacrilegious, but it is the truth. American brewers have gone 110% balls to the wall on making on making the greatest beers on earth.

Poured aggressively from an 11.2-oz bottle well within its date range into a goblet.

Look: Opaque brown with just a hint of red in it, some bubbles rising, with a one-inch tan head with fair retention reducing to a foam ring and some floating foam, and exhibiting moderate lacing. Significant suspended sediment becomes visible toward the bottom of the goblet as the linear depth of the beer gets smaller with the drinking.

Nose: Ripe and over-ripe apples on the ground in an apple orchard — that’s NOT an unpleasant fragrance — a little cherry, and a good roasted malt foundation.

Taste: Malted grain dominant in the attack, with some sweetness and some tangy apple. Alcohol evident. Bitterness in the finish. The flavor intensifies wonderfully as the beer warms.

Mouthfeel: Thick, adequate carbonation.

Overall: A chewy, flavorful quad — excellent and true to style. First had this at Boca restaurant in Cincinnati, as the pairing with Beef Wellington, and have kept an active cellar-to-fridge four-pack of it at home ever since. Finally getting around to reviewing it! If I want a quad, this is the first one I reach for.

I had the 750mL bottle which was definitely WAY too much for me. However, the beer was delicious and I can see why so many people would consider it to be a world-class beer.

This is the standard to which all Quads should be judged. I love this beer! Buy a 750 ml bottle every winter and enjoy by the firepit. One of my top 5 favorite beers.

330 cl bottle pours cola brown with large tan caramel head. Aroma is malty bready stone fruit. Taste is sweet, bitter, alcohol, rye. As it warms, apple, red currants, tannins. Mouthfeel is medium bodied, fine carbonation. Amazing.
