We all go through those experimental phases in life, and Grayton Beer is no different. Their experimental IPA celebrates the unique character of Callista, Sultana and Cashmere hops upon a lighter IPA base taste for full appreciation and effect.
Just A Phase pours a rather deep amber with honey-like hues white releasing a creamy white froth. Aromas of citrus, herb, stone fruit and spruce create a unique medley of character to the nose. A toasty sweet early taste though has the first impressions trending malty with caramel, granola and candied nuttiness.
The hops make a bold mark on the middle palate as the malt sweetness starts to recede. Apricot, grapefruit, orange and bruised pineapple give the taste a rich fruit character while more herbal flavors of pine, cedar and freshly muddled grasses come with a peppery bite and a moderate bitterness late in taste.
Medium bodied and trending slightly fuller for such a modestly strengthened IPA, the beer trends in the direction of American Amber Ale or American Pale Ale. Those hops though give the session a highly individualistic taste with standout qualities for a rather memorable beer experience.
