As a dying breed, the Irish Red Ale has many impostors, those trying to imitate the classic Irish style but poorly developed and brewed. Grayton has on display a solid original example, alive and well in its natural habitat.
Lightly hazy and deep in copper, Miley Crying is served with a stark-white and long lasting froth. With toasty aromas of nuttiness, caramelization, medium toast and a slight floral scent, the aromas sell a malty impression. Similarly in taste, its the flavors of caramel, nuttiness and honey that bring a malty taste to the tastebuds first in a very granola kind of way.
As the ale rolls along the middle palate, its sweetness turns more and more toasty as its malt character subsides and fades into a semi-dry character with those pecan and toast flavors framing the bulk of taste. A late turn to slight bitterness shows a balance for the lingering malts and adds a snappy crispness to the late palate.
Medium bodied and on the sweeter side of malty-dry, Miley Cryish is a solid American attempt at a tried and true Irish Red Ale. Finishing toasty and slightly woodsy, the red ale lingers with a medium toasted character of peanut skins and granola once more.
