Spot on rendering of the style.
Poured into a tulip glass, the beer retained a slick of off-white foam and lacing.
The nose was a fine balance of roast, piney hops (a la its namesake) and just a slight kick if alcohol esters.
The taste was appropriately bitter with a malty middle and a dry, hop-like finish.
Mouthfeel was not overly thick but gave something for the tongue to hang onto.
Overall, an more than adequate rendition and well worth a taste.

P: Opaque root beer colour with a malted head. Short lived head but good lace.
A: Pine and grapefruit. Cascadian hops and malt.
T: Heavy resin and heavy grapefruit with other citrus undertones. Hoppy, roasted malt. A hint of cocoa.
M: Well balanced, medium to full bodied, nice carbonation, crisp and clean.
O: This being the 4th different beer from El Segundo Brewing Company, I'm further impressed. An amazing BIPA.

Bottled on 12/11/15.
Pours an opaque black with a foamy dark khaki head that settles to a partial film on top of the beer. Foamy rings of lace line the glass on the drink down. Smell is of dark roasted malt, cocoa powder, citrus zest, and pine needle aromas. Taste is much the same with cocoa powder, earth, char, citrus zest, and pine needle flavors on the finish. There is a medium amount of bitterness on the palate with each sip. This beer has a lower level of carbonation with a slightly crisp and dry mouthfeel. Overall, this is a good beer with tasty flavors, but the smell on this one has a slightly better mix of roast, citrus, and pine to me.
Serving type: bottle.

Very dark brown color with a very lovely beige foam that lasts to the end of the pour. Really toasty with a charred grain aroma, though rather pleasant. Sudsy and mouthfilling.
The dark roasted malt dominates the initial sips but then the hops take over. A touch of malty sweetness. This is so leafy and dank, but also there's a seriously bitter chocolate taste. It's a little more bitter than I think necessary, but the hop fiends will find it rewarding. Clean and well made. From the 22 oz bottle purchased at Bottlecraft in San Diego.
