Have had a number of El Segundo beers now (they only recently became available in the NW, but you see there stuff on tap practically everywhere now), and in my book, they continue to be consistently inconsistent. They seem to be very well regarded by better craft beer bars in town, and I have had some good beers from them, but then they put out something like this (or the Power Plant TIPA).

The beer pours an extremely hazy orange amber color with very light lacing and minimal head retention. Given the name, I figured this was supposed to be yet another NE style IPA (the bartender confirmed that was the case), but I know even he was a bit surprised by how hazy and opaque this beer was (and was wondering if everything was OK with the beer and keg). Anyway, although I wasn't particularly impressed by the appearance of this beer, the aroma was flat out terrific. There was a huge nose of orange citrus, light tropical fruit, some light pine, and a huge blast of dank weed. Given the nose, I was expecting this beer to be great. It wasn't. The flavor profile struck me as just weird, and it was a chore trying to drink this beer (just ordered an 8 ounce glass, but even that was too much for me). There was an initial blast of intense citrus, which almost immediately was pushed aside by a huge gush of dry hoppy bitterness. This beer was very dry on the palate, which just seemed weird for the style. Also, while I appreciate the fact that the beer had some level of bitterness for a change (one of my criticisms of many NE style IPA's is that there's virtually no bitterness in the finish), this was just too much of a good thing in my book. There also seemed to be some noticeable heat from the alcohol in this beer (something that seems to be a frequent problem with El Segundo IPA's), which didn't play well with the bitterness on the finish. Mouthfeel was medium bodied otherwise I guess, with a long, bitter, and somewhat hot finish. I kept on waiting for the beer to soften and open a bit (as it sat in my glass), but it never did.

This is definitely not my cup of tea.
