300th review! So exciting. Those Kiwis must like heaps of hops in their brews, because this is tasting like a sessionable version of Hammerland DIPA.
Then again, it is El Segundo.
Honestly this kind of beer is basically my drink of summer, so I'm all about this crazy hop juice. Take me to flavortown, papi.
The can is pretty forgettable; poured into a tulip, the body is a shimmery semi-transparent golden yellow with a snow white head. Retention is alright for a WCIPA, but they rarely look very impressive. Spots of lacing, but not much.
The aroma is where this sucker really shines. Loud, dank notes of spruce, pine, cedar, grapefruit, lime, passion fruit, mango, papaya and tangelo leap out of the glass and tickle your nose hairs. The dankness here cannot be overstated. No matter how long I hold my nose over this thing, I don't get a hint of malt.
I do on the palate, though. A lovely sourdough pizza dough taste balances beautifully against the bitter tart hoppy bite. I get lots of passion fruit, mango and grapefruit notes here as well.
Excellent crisp dry mouthfeel. If you didn't check the label you might think this is actually a session IPA and crush the whole four pack in a couple hours.
If this is how they like their beer, I would bet money that we SoCal beach bums would definitely get along with them Kiwis. Cheers from across the world's largest ocean!
