A very dark brown with red highlights. The nose is compelling. Roasty and cocoa like with spice, earth, warming. Mild grapefruit acidity with funk present. The palate opens with a blend of Belgian stout - spicy, cocoa, earthy and baking chocolate- and lambic. Earthy, musty, bitter grapefruit, mild tannins. Drying, fruity finish. Solid.

Copenhagen 19/4 2020. 75 cl bottle from Belgisk Bryg, Emdrup Mosevej, Kbh. NV. The label tries to underline that this beer is blend which is done by mixing two labels. One with a grinning old man and one a bit more stylized in Tilquin's fashion.

Pours opaque dark brown with a small, bubbly off-white head. Settles as thin, patchy layer of foam unable to cover the surface of the beer. Moderate lacing.

Aroma is medium intense with a medium strong sugary sweetness and a prominent sharp sour odor. Camel, brown sugar and toffee. Unripe berries and vinegar. Light whiff of metal.

Light carbonation. Thin, oily, lightly tingling texture.

Flavor is intense with a medium strong sweetness followed by a stronger vinegary sourness. Aftertaste is tart and sour with a light sweet undercurrent. Lingers for a while. Finish is vinous and dry.

Mixing a Bruin and a Lambic gives a fairly weird result - but calling it. a Stout is downright strange. But then again whom am I to object to strange bedfellows?

2019 vintage drank in 2025.

I had this on draft 8/29/24 @ the Hopleaf.

Dark brown / orange appearance.

Huge khaki head; frothy lacing remained.

Lemon & mild raspberry notes in the nose. No stout detected yet, but it smells like a great lambic.

Creamy medium mouthfeel.

Lemon flavors up front; faint cocoa notes on the finish. As this warmed, tart grapefruit hits the lips.

Cool, this was a fusion dream; warm, it got a bit more prickly. However, it was very tasty throughout and it's a unique beer. I'd have another!

Dark brown appearance with a beige head, good retention, and some lacing albeit a small pour. The stout and lambic interact to produce really tasteful notes of oak, molasses, fig, bitter chocolate, plum, and cherry skin. Moderate body, moderate carbonation, bright mouthfeel.

 

 

Fairly clear brown body with a lovely ruby highlight, with a fine, sand coloured head, nice retention that forms back up with a swirl.
Aroma has tart acidity, some raisin, oak, light funk.
Flavour is moderately tart, grape juice, green apple, a bit of cola, with just whispers of roast, chocolatey malt in the finish; light, fine carbonation, medium body, lightly acidic

Simple and straightforward, not pushing the extremes on anything. Well crafted technically.

A 750ml corked and caged bottle, with a neck label of 2019-2020, and a best before date of 12th March 2030. Poured into a Tilquin stemmed glass.

Appearance: Dark brown in colour with a copper hue and a very nice two finger beige head that had pretty good retention and left lots of nice lacing.

Aroma: Tart, green apple, dried cherries, light roast, cocoa, caramel, and a slight hazelnut nuttiness.

Taste: Tart, green apple, grapes, vinegar, dried cherry, caramel, cocoa, milk chocolate, with very light roasty notes.

Mouthfeel: Medium bodied with moderate carbonation.

Overall: This was blended well with interesting aroma and flavours, and was enjoyable to drink.

Oct. 2020: 750 ml corked & caged bottle, vintage 2015-2016, from Vinmonopolet, Nettbutikken. ABV is 7.0%. Very dark brown to black colour, large beige head. Vinous aroma, notes of farmhouse, oak and lightly roasted malts. Medium sour flavour, notes of brettanomyces, red wine vinegar, oak and roast malts.

From the corked, caged 2018-2019 bottle with an expiration date of 12/04/2021. Sampled July 22, 2021.

A dark brown appearance with ruby red hues underneath a lacing-leaving long-lasting tan head. Attractive.

The aroma makes me think of cocoa, nuts, green apple. overripe fruit, and a wild hop zestiness.

The mouthfeel is a little lighter than I imagined but closing in on medium.

The tartness really jumps forward in the flavor but I still get ample quantities of cocoa, dark roast, nuts, green apple, green grapes, and a tart bite to finish.

Presentation: 750ml green bottle with the batch years on a neck label and the best before date on the back label served in a tulip glass.

Appearance: The bone white, two finger head stays around for a while and leaves behind a lot of lacing in big patches all over. It's a deep brownish color that turns a beautiful, dark amber when held up to light.

Smell: It's a beautiful aroma of caramel, green grapes, lemon and something reminiscent of a barnyard with notes of damp oak and hay.

Taste: It's tart and acidic at first with notes of green grapes and lemon. There's also a touch of bitter oak and a soft, brown sugar sweetness. It finishes with a peculiar roasted nut flavor.

Mouthfeel: It's medium bodied and quite crisp with high carbonation but it goes down smooth.

Overall: A very interesting beer with a lot of complexity and rich, bold flavors. It's surprising how much of a Lambic character this has considering it's made up of 7/8 oud bruin and just 1/8 Lambic.

 

 

I picked up a 750 ml bottle from a local shop. It pours a deep brownish color, one with crimson hues if held to the light. The head is impressive. Tall, rocky, thick, and intense....cream colored. The smell has a bit of cider-like tartness and deep roasted notes. It is well balanced. Flavorful, with a mix of sweetness and sourness....roastedness and funk...chocolate and fruit. Interesting and engaging.

 

 

On tap at Novare

750ml bottle, 2015/16 on the front label, best before 22/03/2026 on the reverse label, poured into a Gueuze Tilquin tumbler glass.

The beer pours a dark cola brown color, black and burgundy hues with an off white head, about a finger tall with moderate retention and soapy lacing. The aroma is interesting, light roast, a hint of coffee, hearty brown bread, toasted grain, chocolate, fruity funk, light acidity, earthiness lingers. The flavors are nice, lambic funk leads the way, but is quickly overtaken by hearty grains, toasted and bready with a nice element of roasted coffee, dark chocolate, oak, funk, citrus acidity and fruitiness helps draw out some stone fruits at the finish. The mouthfeel is curious, lighter medium body, bright and vibrant with plenty of carbonation, tart, crisp and with a dry finish.

Verdict: A very provocative beer, certainly breaks the mold and explores new boundaries. The lambic is well expressed and in many ways does seem to compliment the stout, but in others does seem a bit distracting and counterproductive. The body and finish definitely feel more like a lambic than stout and the more fruit forward citrus acidity is more puzzling. The important thing is that it's an enjoyable beer albeit a head scratcher.
