Wred Wheat is a staple house tap at a nearby pub, although they branded it as their own house beer. More power to ya - Big Rock does this everywhere.

While I quite like most of Wild Rose's selections, I would do well if I never had this again. The best comparison I can give this beer is that it looks, smells, tastes, and basically IS a slightly up-market Rickards Red. Surprisingly, I'd rather have a Rickards than this. Tough to put my finger on exactly why, but the combination of malt they use just doesn't do it for me. It's not offensive by any means, but this is one of those beers that just doesn't mesh with my palate.

Long a staple of Wild Rose, at some point in the last few years it became a draught-only exclusive at a few semi-random locations in the vicinity of the brewery. Which is a shame, because it's got a decent amount to recommend itself (particularly over WR's standard, unspectacular Velvet Fog wheat beer).

Pours a light coppery, hazy colour, capped by some fairly lethargic head. Smells of citrus, yeast, wheat, banana, clove, spices, and a nice toasted/roasted malt character. Taste offers much the same. Carbonation is moderate, body is moderate.

Not something to write home about, and maybe its disappearance from shelves makes me feel a bit wistful. But I do always like to see it popping up on draught locally, and I will happily have a pint if nothing new or unusual catches my eye.

Poured a bottle obtained from a Pick 6 craft beer wall into a weizen glass. A nice looking brew, dark reddish bronze with around two inches of light khaki colored foam. Smells like classic grainy wheat spice, cereals with hints of caramel, grassy hop and fruity ale yeast esters. Unless the particular example is well-hopped I find it hard to detect much aroma in this style. On the palate, I get a strong wheat flavor coupled with nuts and delicate brown sugar, along with more vague fruitiness. A tad syrupy yet somehow watery as well, difficult to describe this seeming paradox ... Likely a diacetyl by-product, almost a buttered bread effect going on here. Aggressive carbonation that lifts up the wheat husk and spice. Someone below compared this favorably to Grasshopper and I echo that sentiment. A decent showcase for rather unadulterated lightly toasted wheat flavor.

A: Light copper leaning to amber/red, bright & clear with multiple streams of rising bubbles, a small supper light-tan head, and just a bit of lace.

S: Caramelly, toasty, biscuit, and a fair bit of diacetyl. Just the barest bit of sweetness. Perhaps just maybe the barest ghost hint of hops in the background.

T: Caramel & biscuit are still there, but toasty really grows & gains a grainy edge too. Sweetness is a bit more faint from nose. This is a more dry & toasty brew. Diacetyl gets in there too. Hops are both herbal/grassy and citrusy in only a slightly muted manner.

M: Just a hair over medium body with a matched carbonation. A fair bit of sweetness at the start, a bit of chew in the middle, & a sort of semi-dry at finish mostly from hops. Slightly flabby pub feel.

D: An amalgam of styles. A mix of English & US pale and a US dark Kristal wheat. US pub pale grain bill with both US and English hops. US overall, but with noticeable diacetyl & noticeable wheat base. A bit different without expecting it. Tasty & drinkable though.

Appearance - Pours a pale copper colour with a half finger width of cream-coloured head.

Smell - Caramel, wheat, biscuits/bread... sweet baked good aromas.

Taste - Crisp wheat flavour supported by the sweet caramel notes, with a touch of biscuits.

Mouthfeel - Light/medium bodied with light carbonation. Smooth body.

Overall - A great dark wheat ale by Wild Rose. Almost sits on the border of being a wheat ale/red-amber ale hybrid. Great flavours for those who enjoy caramel and bready flavours.

341ml bottle poured into a 16oz pint glass.

A - Clean amber-red with a foamy cap of light tan head. Decent head retention with some nice patches of lacing.

S - Mild sweetness, cereal grain, that's about it. Really underwhelming nose here...

T - Mild sweet maltiness with a nutty undertones. Aftertaste gets blasted away with a harsh metallic taste that pretty much destroys what little this profile had going for it. No wheat flavor really. The sweetness is almost cloying. Really no redeeming factors here...

M - Light to medium body, carbonation is a touch too fizzy for my liking. Doesn't help the flavor at all.

D - I fail to see a difference between this and any other boring dark lager out there, and I don't see much of a point in having a style dedicated to this type of beer if they all taste this boring. Call a spade a spade, this is a dark lager, and not a good one at that.

341ml bottle poured into pint glass 20/10/11

A clear reddish amber with enough bubbles to form a two finger tan head that hangs around long enough to leave some random lace

S nose if pretty faint with some plum a little hops and lots of cereal

T lots of grains and a little nutty chocolate to go with what I smell

M light bodied almost to the point of being watery, bubbles liven it up a bit pretty average in this department

O easy enough too drink but pretty one sided

an OK beer but nowhere near some of Wild Rose's better offerings, not sure how I've never tried this one before

A- Poured into my standard bottle glass, and was greeted with a decently thick eggshell colored head, that receded into a good layer of dense foam. Coloration is a mostly clear rusty color with lots of carbonation rising to the top, with a couple of big looking bubbles swiftly coming up as well. Lacing is modest at best, with fizzy looking wisps of foam clinging, then disappearing into obscurity.

S- Unboiled malt quickly comes to mind at first, and lots of raw grain to go with it....not what I really expected. There is also a berry and/or roasted coffee bean like sweetness to compliment this. Not really is there any hop bitterness to offset all this sweetness....

T- There is a lot of graininess to the beer as well as lots of sweet malt. It seems that there is almost a syrupy quality here as well. It's a weird blend of fruitiness and toasted bread, possibly with some roasted nuts mixed in as well....no distinct hop bitterness on the finish.

M- Medium/lite body with some yeasty bread like quality to it. Carbonation is generally smooth and provides a creamy feeling. Nothing really special here....

O- This review was more difficult than I anticipated it would be....this beer doesn't stand out and unfortunately, I think it's Wild Roses' weak point so far. I would still drink it again, but wouldn't go out of my way to buy it. I prefer Rickards Red to this as far as a red goes. Not offensive, just not my favorite is all and I think it could be improved on!

Wild Rose's WRed Wheat Ale pours a slightly hazy copper-brown colour with a thin head that dissipates to a patchy cap before a minute passes. Some lacing is left behind on the edges. Odour is dominated by wheat, sweet and nutty malts. No real hop presence in the smell. Promising so far, but I am a little worried this will be too sweet.

Fortunately, it isn't. There are some malt flavors, nuts and caramel sweetness, but wheat is the center of attention here and leads into a (very) slightly dry finish that lasts despite its subtlety. A little tangy. Medium-bodied; carbonation is moderate and appropriate for the style.

Another thumbs up for Wild Rose. This is much better than Grasshopper, which is its logical competitor as the only other Albertan pale wheat ale I can think of. I'm not sure it's really all that pale though. There's nothing stunning here, but it's still a refreshing, somewhat novel example of the style.

Poured a 341-ml bottle into a pint glass.

Appearance - amber-coloured brew with a thin beige head that starts about 1/4-inch and then recedes to some surface foam. Very slight lacing noted.

Smell - fairly deep malty aroma, not overly spicy as one might expect from a wheat ale. A bit of sweetness anticipated.

Taste - quite a balanced flavour with a slight sweet malty flavour up front then comes the typical WR roasted taste and a bit of faint hop bitterness.

Mouthfeel - overall pretty active at the start and then a thinning change to leave the mouth wet.

Drinkability - good and refreshing, one of the better offerings from these guys.

I've had this on several occasions, but this is my first formal review.

A - Pours a copper colour with a reddish hue, thin layer of head which quickly dissipates to small islands and some fine sporadic lacing.

S - Bushels of wheat and grassy hops, followed by some sweet caramel and burnt sugar. The finish is quite nice, but the wheat is a bit overpowering.

T - Again the wheat dominates, full grains overload the palette followed by some sweet caramel malts and grassy hops. The taste of burnt bread lingers on the tongue, with some roasted nuts also coming through. Unique flavour indeed.

M - No harm done in this category, light bubbly feel, finishes wet and goes down smooth.

D - A tasty and unique offering. Again, not a favourite of mine from Wild Rose, but I would never turn one down. It's easily drinkable, but the overwhelming wheat flavours are a bit of a turnoff. Would like to try this one on tap to see if the flavours come through differently.

A - a clear bubbly bronze, short white head didn't retain very long
S - wheat with sweet and nutty malts, and a subtle pineapple hint
T - a rich roasted nut flavour, a wheat breadiness with a touch of sweetness
M - kick of carbonation leads to a thickish savoury bread feel
D - everything about this beer is a little better than the average wheat ale, nothing special, but is non the less enjoyable

Pours a clear amber with a shimmering red highlight to it. 2 finger cap retreats quickly, poor lacing. Moderate carbonation.

Aroma is 2 dimensional with caramel malts over grassy hops.

Thin body, bit of wheat dryness and biscuity taste at the front, thin balanced center, lightly bitter watery finish. Needs more malt or some toasted grains to bring up the body and set off the profile.

Really forgettable.

Poured a clear reddish brown with a two finger frothy cream coloured head. The head diminished to a ring but the thin lacing persisted. Mild bread yeast smells. Slight esters. Taste was bready malts with a slightly metallic hop finish. Mouthfeel was light in body, lightly carbonated. Drinkability was pretty good. A worthy beer. I hope to try it on tap soon. A rather unusual malty wheat. A couple of bottles in the six were not properly carbonated. Probably a sealing problem.

20oz pint at the taproom in Calgary. As I just missed getting to try the barley wine on draft by less than a day, I guess it's time to give this long-overlooked offering a spin.

This beer appears a clear medium ruddy amber colour, with one fat finger of puffy, bubbly, and weirdly creamy ecru head, which leaves some bubble-wrap lace around the glass in its generous wake.

It smells of semi-sweet, slightly biscuity and fruity wheat and caramel malt, buttered toast, and leafy, earthy, and floral hops. The taste is more biscuity caramel malt, a twinge of sweet wheatiness, and more mild, earthy hops, with the slightest of alcohol edges (could be because I'm drinking this on the patio, in early May - why am I the only one out here?).

The carbonation is moderate, just a wee bit frothy, the body medium-light in weight, and just a tad prickly in its smoothness. It finishes well off-dry, the caramel and wheat malt sashaying out of here all nice and cozy-like.

A pleasant enough, bolstered wheat ale, I could see having a few of these on the patio, once this bloody Alberta weather smartens up. Not a lot of examples of this blending of styles out there on the market, so best you try it from these guys.

A medium bodied ale with good mouth feel. Not overly sweet as some red and amber ales tend to be. It has some minor floral flavors and hints of brown sugar and vanilla. Hops are well balanced and evident in the finish. This is the kind of beer i could drink every day. Really nice during the summer with some ribs or steak on the grill.

a- beautiful dark red colour. Wred, you could say. With lazy little bubbles rising to the top. Puffy white head forms after a very agressive pour. Magical head leaves lotsa lace.

s- stiff, woody. serious malt influence. classy. Not a whole lot of hop here, but that's by no means a bad thing.

t- Solid, well balanced beer. Reminiscent of the WR Brown Ale, but less hoppy and much smoother. The malt is subtle but not shy. The herbal hops come in late to give a nice
drying aftertaste which is long and satisfying.

m- Medium bodied, good carbonation to back it up.

d- This is a professional beer. It wears a suit and tie, and doesn't fuck around. Very, Very drinkable yet not oversimplified. A pint of this stuff would be great at the bar
with fish and chips or some nice salty appetizers. Easily beats anything in its class as far as Canadian red ales available in Alberta are concerned. Good Job WR, Good Job.

Poured with a spare, off-white head that quickly diminished to almost nothing. Body was amber-colored and slightly hazy. Aroma was of light wheat, some slight malt in there as well. Medium-bodied on the palate, thin-textured yet slightly oily. Average carbonation and a slightly bitter finish. Tasted lightly sweet and wheaty in the beginning, but finished with a very low bitter taste. Interesting. Overall I liked what they've tried to do here, and I feel they've succeeded more than they've failed. I'd definitely have it again.

I'm not sure I would call this an 'american pale wheat ale' - its not within the range in terms of colour, and it not crap like the style usually seems to be.

Pours a rich mahogany with a tight off-white head that lasted for a while and gave up some spotty lace. Husky wheat and caramel aroma, with a touch of sweetness. The flavour is very solid, and impresses me for a beer of this kind. There's a lot of nut mixed in with some caramel and a slight sharpness from the wheat. A good deal of light roast tones can be found throughout, and the hopping is surprisingly high, providing a decent bitterness. Medium body and medium-light carbonation seem well suited.

I've had a fair few of these wheat ales in my time and they've never impressed me with their insipid flavours and inconsequential watery bodies. This one is different, though. The flavours are solid without overpowering, the appearance is pleasing and the body has substance. Its a beer I could quite easily session, and one that I'd be happy to reccomend.

Bottle: Poured a clear light brown color ale with a medium foamy head with average retention and minimal lacing. Aroma of wheat with some dry caramel malt is somewhat interesting. Taste is also a nice mix between some wheat malt with light cloves ester and some dry caramel malt. Very refreshing with good carbonation and average body.

Certain ales make the transition from tap to bottle well. This is one of the ones that didn't.

I've never had it on tap, so I've got to take other BAers' word that this is a worthy beer. Now that I've had it in bottles, I'll be really hard pressed to try the draught version if there's any other choice.

Pours a clear dark amber (who classified this as a hefe?) with a moderate head that settles down pretty quickly. Smell is of old dry leaves and twigs with a little lager spilled on them. Taste is mild and dry, and completely unremarkable. There's a hollowness to this beer that's startling when you stop to examine it. It demands you drink it as quickly as possible. Out of the bottle it's near undrinkable - in a glass it's slightly better. It's like a Grasshopper with all the sweetness and character notes sucked out of it.

Wild Rose has shown us that they're capable of so much more -- their Imperial IPA was nothing short of fantastic -- so why are their regularly bottled offerings so bland? It's almost as though Alberta's brewers all have the idea that Albertans are rough-hewn sons of the soil that view any kind of flamboyance in a beer as suspect. That may be true, in the main, but there's a growing number of drinkers looking for something a little wilder.

Served with a small creamy white head, the body is a deep nutty transluscent amber in appearance. Sweet yet tart aroma, caramel malt with a bit of husky wheat grain. Robust nutty and toffee malts up front in the flavour. Some sharp wheat in the middle, along with mild coffee notes on the finish, accompanied by dandelion-like hops. Medium-bodied mouthfeel. This is a surprisingly savoury and malty wheat ale, nothing like I was expecting, but in the end it makes for a great sessional.

I had to try another pint at the brewery while waiting to pick up my party pig.
Beer is a clear, amber gold color with a decent sized head of white foam. There is good retention, with thin lace and a thin cap that lasted almost to the end. There some caramel malt smell with hops present. There is good flavor, with some grainy malt mixed with the wheat finish. Some grassy malt character also. Well carbonated keep it fresh and light.
Tasted very good while sitting in the sun on a hot day.

Note to Self: Ranked #11 American Dark Wheat Ale when I tried it (but it is a really short list)

I poured a pint of this at home with my WR party pig, filling my glass with an amber brew topped by a sizable off-white head. It had good retention that left a creamy cap and lacy rings on my glass. The aroma is predominantly caramel with some floral hops.

The flavour parrots the taste, with some biscuity malt and a grainy finish thrown in. A touch dry and a bit smoky, too. The carbonation is prickly and too high.

This isn't a hefe in the true sense of the word, that's for sure. Putting style aside, however, cutting the carbonation would measurably improve things and bump up its drinkability. As it is, it's subtly-flavoured brew that I haven't minded taking home.

On-tap at the brewery, revived after several years. Reddish with a small crown. More a wheat and little characterstic of a hefe as wattery and malty,caramel but not overally sweet. not shaken up creaminess. More of an all-malt lager slash cream ale. Above average carbonation.
