Appearance - Pours a slightly cloudy medium copper/amber colour with three fingers of foamy off-white head.

Smell - Piney hops, Cascade hops, grapefruit and lemon peel, tropical fruit.

Taste - Piney hops and caramel malts are well balanced. Tropical fruit adds a little more dimension. Excellent level of moderate bitterness throughout.

Mouthfeel - Medium bodied with moderate carbonation.

Overall - Tree Brewing delivers a great unfiltered IPA with a balance of caramel malts and piney hops.

650ml bottle. Is it just me, or does the label imagery look more like something from a Sriracha factory?

This beer pours a hazy, yet bright medium copper amber colour, with three flabby fingers of puffy, rocky, and filmy off-white head, which leaves some sudsy Middle Eastern script lace around the glass as it slowly ebbs away.

It smells of pungent herbal, leafy, lesser citrusy, and pine hops, spicy yeast, white pepper, crackery pale and caramel malt, and further floral, lightly perfumed notes. The taste is acrid pine/spruce needles, musty florals, very underripe orange and grapefruit rind, doughy yeast, grainy, crackery malt - now almost bereft of any sort of caramel sweetness - and more herbal, leafy bitterness to keep up this happy and hoppy charade.

The bubbles are pleasantly rendered, in the way of a moderately sassy frothiness, the body a sturdy medium weight, and actually pretty smooth, what with all those provocative hop esters flitting about. It finishes mostly dry, a few caramel malt ghosts going native zombie on us, while the various hop bitters settle in for the long haul.

Yup, they done did it - they made me (temporarily, of course) forget about Hophead, or Double Hophead, or Hophead Red, or whatever, with a new, differentiated hop assault. I don't exactly know, from a brewing standpoint, what the lack of filtering does for an otherwise equal beer's attributes, but I'm grokking it, party people. Perhaps it's a simple case of looks do freaking matter, and I'm cheating on the IPA that brung me, but I'll gladly dance with this one right now.

Commercial Description:
"The RAW Series is an expression of our brews in UNFILTERED fashion. Exhibiting rich colour and pronounced aromas each memorable brew retains the flavours derived from the malts to create a truly intense taste profile and a balanced finish.

The RAW IPA displays an aroma of pronounced grapefruit leading to a full flavoured well hopped brew balanced with intense citrus flavours and a dry finish."

Review:

This is definitely one the best things they've brewed.

It has a lot of familiar flavours: Herbal bitterness from the Perle and some Cascade like a Sierra Nevada Pale ale; plenty of centennial like Driftwoods Fat Tug; some crystal that's reminiscent of Rogues Brutal Bitter/IPA.

When I saw the malt bill, I thought it might be a bit muddled, but they really play a supporting role while still allowing a crisp, clean finish.

Very Moreish.
