Barrel-aged Vertical Winter Ale (which has vanilla).

A: Copper with an off-white head, ring of retention leaves some nice lace.

S: Initially hit of vanilla subsides to sponge toffee and a little wood.

T: The vanilla is upfront but once the taste buds adjust a raspy, woodsy, whiskey flavour comes through. It works well. Modest bitterness yeilds a light sweetness that works with the vanilla, sponge toffee and beer-nut flavours.

M: Light to moderate body has a crisp finish.

D/O: It's flawless and the flavours work, but it's not the most exciting barrel-aged brew.

Props to my bro in Kelowna for the hook up on this rarity...

A - Pours a nice dark copper colour with a reddish hue, finger of head with solid retention and some sporadic lacing.

S - Scent is dominated by sweet caramel malts, toffee, roasted grains, a hint of peat and a touch of whiskey.

T - Surprisingly diverse on the palette, the whiskey notes come through nicely off the top, but are subtle offering up a hint of sweetness. Hints of wooden oak come through alongside a bready caramel and buttery notes.

M - Medium bodied, smooth and a touch of dry on the finish.

O - Overall a tasty treat and the flavour offered up something unique. The whiskey aging is present but subtle, in a complementary way. Definitely glad I had the opportunity to take this one for a test drive. Thanks bro!

Another big THANK YOU to Derek for another serendipity! I really don't remember seeing these on the shelf... how were they not on my radar??

Appearance. Pours a rich gold-amber with just a little haze and almost 3 fingers of thick cream coloured head.

Smell. Vanilla scented candles!! It actually smells better and more natural than that, but that's the first thing that popped into my head. A little sweet woody bourbon in there too

Taste. Sweet vanilla, a little caramel candy, just a bit of whiskey and bitter wood.

Mouthfeel. Medium body with smooth below-medium carbonation.

Overall. A fine brew! Barrel aged and sweet with a nice bit of whiskey, yet easy drinking. Nice change from all of the HUGE barrel aged beers out there.
