Copper orange in colour. Small, tight head with a little lacing.
Hoppy aroma.
Stewed hops in flavour, light malt with some nuttiness.
Smooth mouthful.
In the end rather uneventful.

A 500ml clear glass bottle with a BB of Oct 2012. Picked up from a supermarket in Oxford. The name (Cheltenham SPA) is a play on the fact that Cheltenham is a spa town famous for its natural spring water. The building on the front label is the pump room, where the water is available for public consumption. The label mentions the use of chocolate and crystal malts, in addition to three hop varieties.

Poured into a Sam Smith's pint glass. A clear coppery-amber colour with medium carbonation. Forms a small, off-white head of foam that lasts for a minute or so before disappearing. Aroma of biscuity caramel malt with a hint of roasted grain, grassy stewed hops and a faint whiff of iodine.

Tastes of roasted malt with a bitter finish. Notes of caramel, stewed hops and a subtle hint of chocolate and nuttiness. A distinguished dry bitterness upon swallowing. Mouthfeel is smooth, dry and tingly, with a thick, full body and nicely judged carbonation. Slightly astringent, with an aftertaste of bitter roasted malt and caramel.

Quite nice, even if it doesn't blow your socks off. A solid traditional ale with a distinctly malty character. The aroma doesn't give too much away, but when you taste it the darker roasted malts burst forth onto your palate. A hint of aroma hops might have added something extra, and they could do with ditching the clear glass. A tasty bitter - worth sampling if you come across it.

500ml Clear bottle: best before Apr 2013, poured into an Abbot Ale glass tankard on Sunday 10 June 2012.

Nice brown, deep amber coloured body: on top an off-white head sat on top.

Malty, nutty aroma and taste with a spritzy, well carbonated bodyfeel a slight hop bitterness appears towards the end of each sip, but this is a malt first brew, the hops important but secondary in prominence.
