Review based on the BJCP2008 guidelines (style 14C). AROMA: intense floral, piny, resinous aroma. faint sweet malt background with some fruity notes. some alcohol notes but not of hot character. APPEARANCE: dark Orange color and very hazy. ivory thin moussy head with low retention. TASTE: balanced sweet malt profile with high bitterness that lingers into a dry finish. hop flavours are reminiscent of floral and pine. some fruitiness is present (grapes, tropical fruits). PALATE: smooth medium-low body with medium-low carbonation. smooth alcohol warming. OVERALL: a nicely done and balanced imperial IPA with a good hop bouquet (aromas and flavours).

330ml bottle bought online from Ales By Mail

Poured a rusty copper colour with some yeasty haziness. Slightly off white head poured tight thick and foamy then faded to thin frothy coating... no carbonation bubbles... decent amount of sticky lacing clings to the glass...

Aroma - Piney and citrusy hop bitterness to the fore mixed with a good amount of treacle sweetness, some ginger hints, biscuity malts, cut wet grass and hay, floral, tart fruits (strong grapefruits, lemons, pears and apples), faint woodiness...

Taste - Bready and biscuity malts mixed with lots of grapefruit fruitiness and piney / grassy hop bitterness which is maybe a little on harsh side, some caramel sweetness, good roasted nut bitterness, other fruits include ripe pears and lemons, very floral and perfumed, resiny notes..

Feel - Smooth and slightly oily... medium bodied... because of the high alcohol and slightly harsh hops this isn't the most drinkable brew...

Overall - A pretty good if maybe slightly unbalanced DIPA.... worth a try though...

Maelstrom Double IPA 9.0% abv. 330ml

Maelstrom Double India Pale Ale is an unashamedly big bold American style badboy. Big 'dank' US hops such as Columbus & Warrior coupled with Simcoe & Centennial used in obscene quantities make for a huge smooth rolling hop hit underpinned with sweetness from the considerable malt body, both meet & mesh perfectly. A robust full on IPA, at the same time having finesse & poise. Once the aromas of pine, citrus & dank heavy US hops draw you in, any chance of rescue has gone, you're in the Maelstrom!
