The oatmeal stout is actually a pumpkin oatmeal stout. The beer pours a medium brown head that lasts quite a while and does not dissipate completely. The beer color is a dark chocolate black with hints of dark brown. The beer smells strongly of pumpkin with hints of cinnamon and gingerbread. Additionally, the beer has a bready malt smell with strong notes of dark chocolate and hints of cocoa. The oatmeal makes an appearance and mixes well with the other flavors. The tiny hop presence is noticeable but becomes lost in the other flavors. However, the beer has a slight metallic aftertaste that throws off the other flavors. The beer has a heavy body and feels a bit thick but in a good way. A very good pumpkin oatmeal and one that I hope to have again.

this is a pumpkin oatmeal stout on tap at renegade right now. replaces their regular pumpkin ale from last year, and I think its a good direction. rich creamy dark brown pour, flat in luster but well carbonated and hanging on to about a half inch of tan foam. it smells like all the usual suspects as far as pie spice is concerned, but they blend really well with the dark roasted malt and the grainy body of the oats. the flavor sees excellent balance between spice and malt, a pleasant bitter roast character, and a slightly sweet finish with notes of brown sugar. its nto as complex as some, and is certainly a step in refinement away from something like Alaskans pumpkin porter, but its a well conceived brew that I think serves a nice late fall position in the seasonal beer order. dark pumpkin beer is on the rise, and the addition of oatmeal makes this one stand up well on cold weather despite being very drinkable and not particularly heavy in terms of body. good stuff overall.
