definitely not my favorite beer from these guys to date, although its a unique take on the style. its got a nice red look to it, less caramel colored and more on the red scale, with a little lazy haze and a short white head. it smells a little oxidized already, kind of odd in a beer presented as fresh, and its well hoppy. i get some dried cereal from the malt, a little toffee sweetness and brown sugar, but some fresh grassy hops that add a woody and bitter element thats at least as robust as the grain. the flavor is a bit one dimensional with the grain, and somewhat astringent, like they mashed it too warm, tannic a bit, sharp, and overly bitter from the hops too. the booze comes through a lot because there isnt a ton of body to it, and it ends up being a little simple and messy at the same time, unflattering but not bad, and it actually improves as it warms up. not a very distinctive beer for these guys, who are kind of known for that. they did a version in a whiskey barrel from laws here, and that improved the beer tremendously by adding a mellowing factor for the booze, a fuller flusher body from the oak, and more depth of flavor. the not barrel aged version seems like its missing something without it now...
