In an age of so few heroes there is one that always delivers, as will this liquid homage to him. Wham, bam, thank you Van Damme.

Taste: Complex, malty sweet, raisins, dark fruity, bread, rye, spiced. Same with the nose. Dark Mahogany hue, semi clear, with a Belgian lattice on glass. Medium body. GOOOD

Transporting the tastebuds from Indiana to Belgium once more, the brewers at Three Floyds flirt with the fruity, spice and understated nuance of the stronger, darker ale of Belgium. Even its name exudes the taste of the abbey, if the abbey celebrated street fighting.
Man Splits brings a kung fu fight of fruit and spice aromatics to the nose, hovering just above a deep, rusty garnet body and an sepia stained froth. Spice cake and fruit cobblers carry a tawny wine character along with a spicy twinge of rum, pepper and brandy. Sweet on the early palate, the ale's introductions reinforce the taste of toasted breads, cakes and a host of brown sugars and light molasses maltiness.
A gradual retraction of sweetness allows for the full taste of fruit to play out on the middle palate. Dried, dark and pitted varieties of cherry, date, fig and raisin is soon balanced by a rise of fresh peppercorn, cinnamon, allspice, paradise seed and coriander. Trending into an alcohol spice of curacao liquor and spiced rum, a red wine acidity plays delicately on the late palate.
Full in body, the beer has nearly a barleywine kind of heft. Shying away from the premiere dryness and digestibility of classic abbey examples, the complex ale lingers with molasses and biscuit into a deep and satisfying session nevertheless. Peppery fruit and spice cake are lasting impressions in a long afterglow of brandy warmth.

Nice dark color. Very little head. Nose hinted at the spice tastes that awaited.
Had a very smooth strong all spice taste that was still Smith to the taste.

Incredible offering from an IPA heavy brewer. 3 Floyds doesn't make a half-way beer.

Dark mahogany color, tight tan head. Beautiful beer. Aromas are dominated by the ubiquitous funky Belgian yeast, with a faint toffee note.
The Belgian funk is front and center on the taste, accompanied by stone fruit and toffee notes. The feel is a little too spritzy, if this had a little more body, it would be world class, IMHO.

Tasted in an 11 oz snifter from draft at O'Toole's on February 27, 2017. Look is nearly black with a thick tan head and sticky lacing. Smell and taste is dark fruit, spice and toffee malt notes. Feel is medium in body.

From notes. A dark brown color with little head by the time the beer arrived. A mild malty aroma with a lot of dark fruits. The flavor matched the aroma. Sweet with quite a bit of roasted dark malt. Good balance and body with the alcohol hidden well. This was a nice and smooth dark Belgium.
