Very Good
Speed CastleSpeed Castle
Notes: Using hops sourced from German farms, American Pilsner malt, and hand-selected fresh or ‘wet’ hops, Speed Castle is a crisp, refreshing and world-ending Pilsner.

A pilsner named after our favorite White Castle and Speedway located a mere 2 blocks from the brewery. This crisp, refreshing lager was brewed with a single hop variety, Spalter Select, a relatively new hop (1993) bred at the Hull Institute in Germany. The particular hops we used are unique due to the fact they are still “wet” or fresh. They have not been dried and pelletized. Instead they were picked fresh and processed in a way that the fresh hop character is preserved.

Poured into a tall clear pint glass. Clear golden color with more than a finger's worth of white, fluffy head. Good retention and lacing.

Aroma: Smells pretty grassy. Notes of lemongrass, biscuit, grain, bready, nutty, honey, straw, and a small bit of corn.

Taste: Really tasting the lemongrass and grassy notes, essentially everything else mentioned in the aroma, honey adding a nice sweet compliment to the whole of the beer. Body is medium-light.

12oz can
PKG 02/28/22
thanks to Ken for splitting his 6pack with me!
L: clear golden body, fizzy eggshell head fades to a thin foam rather quickly
S: biscuity malt, lemongrass
T: biscuity pilsner malt, cracker, grassy/earthy hops, lemon
F: medium body, moderate carbonation, fairly crisp & semi-dry finish
O: easy drinking German pilsner, but probably not something I’d seek out

Appearance: Pours a completely clear, light golden color with a moderate white head. SRM of 7. (3.75)

Aroma: Mild aromas of pale malts. Some yeast and only traces of lemongrass. Mild. (3.50)

Flavor: Mild flavors of pale malts, dry grains. Some yeast with a faint dry grassy note. Clean finish. (3.50)

Feel: Medium to light bodied. Strong carbonation. Yeasty and a full mouthfeel. Dry and clean. (4.00)

Compared to Summit Twin Pils 5/3/22: Pours a slightly darker color. Milder aromas. More smooth bread malt. Less hoppy and bitter grassy notes. Milder overall. Winner: Twin Pils

Compared to Dos Equis 5/16/22: Pours slightly darker, larger head. More lemon spice, yeast, bread malt. Fuller body and sweeter.

Compared to Stella Artois 5/16/22: Pours slightly darker, larger head. More bread spice, lemon spice, yeast, and bread. Less honeysuckle and smooth pale malts. Overall, pretty similar.

Overall: A pretty light and clean drinking German Pilsner here. I think I expected more in terms of the hops or malt flavor. It's pretty mild all around. Drinks clean, a good mouthfeel, but seems like it's missing a dimension here. (Rating: 3.57)

Appearance - The beer was golden in color with visible carbonation and a fluffy white head crowning the pilsner glass.

Smell - The nose was bright with noted citrus hop profile.

Taste - The beer was bready/biscuity accompanied by a slightly bright citrus hop profile. This is a 3 Floyds pilsner, so its not normal. Rather than using more bitter hops, this came off like a ray of sunshine. I could drink a lot of this on a hot day. The finish allowed the dry backbone to shine.

Mouthfeel - The bready profile clung to the tongue, allowing the dry finish to linger.

Overall - This is a very 3 Floyd’s take on a traditional lager.

I like my pilsners dry and crisp. This is certainly not that. The malt adds little but sweetness. I also thought it would be more hoppy considering its 3 Floyds. Kind of a boring, sweet, light beer.

From the bottom of the can: "PKGD ON 02/15/22 R0498"

Appearance: The body is gold colored and it has good clarity. It has a medium-short white head that is fluffy and has good retention. Mild lacing blotches.

Aroma: There is a light noble hop aroma with a touch of cereal grain with just a bit of acidic aroma.

Taste: Up front there is a somewhat sweet tasting corn puff cereal flavor, then towards the middle there is some light but pleasant herbal hop flavor. That hop character quickly becomes lost with each subsequent sip. It maintains this strong sweetness in the middle. There are notes of black currant and a touch of cherry towards the middle of the palate. The back of the palate is neutral and it finishes clean.

Mouthfeel: It is on the sweeter side and the nearly absent hop bitterness doesn't do much to cut it. it feels medium-light with a touch of grit. Carbonation feels good.

Overall: It's an alright beer that leans strongly on the sweeter side. It also leans slightly on the fruitier side which is likely to put some people off. The malt flavor is good and the texture is nice, as is the appearance. There was only a light bit of noble hop aroma which quickly goes away unless you use a palate cleanser. It is unlikely that I would buy the beer again and it isn't something I would recommend to most.

12oz can pkgd 2/29/22 into a pilsner glass.
L: Pours fairly clear light caramel/gold w/a 3/4" soapy head that quickly recedes to thin edge foam. Med-light carbonation, essentially no lacing.
S: Malty, bready, earthy, grains, very gently nutty.
T: Gently sweet & pale malts, caramel, slightly grassy, earthy hops, moderately rich, semi-bright tasting, a hint of butter. Lightly sweet pale caramel goes to sides of tongue.
F: Brisk, slightly slick med-light bodied mouth feel w/a med-fast gently drying finish.
O: A decent and rich tasting American pilsner that is easy drinking and pleasant. Kind of non-descript but well balanced. I wish it were a bit more crisp. It is very good in it's style.

Beautiful golden straw color that is nearly clear and supports a fluffy white head that provides some nice lacing. Nice bready malt aromas along with a nice noble hop note that features lemongrass aromas.

The lemongrass is forward on the taste and works really well with the bread flavors. The mouthfeel is nicely crisp and draws you back for another sip before you’ve finished the one you’re on. Great lawnmower beer, IMHO.

12oz can PKGD ON 02/24/22 (33 days ago) poured into a tulip pint glass at fridge temp 5.6% ABV. The beer pours bright pale golden yellow with off white head. The head recedes to a thin ring and single layer of bubbles. The aroma is mild with bready malt. The taste is semisweet pale malt with a slight hint of sulphur and mild bitterness. There may be a hint of lemon like citrus on the finish. The mouthfeel is medium bodied with average carbonation and a mostly dry finish. Overall, good.

Moderate head but it deflates to rim bubbles. Some streaks for lace. Clear, light gold color.

Some raw barley aromas, lesser malted barley.

A bit spritzy but also with a richer body. The flavor is similar to the smell except the malted barley is stronger than the raw grain flavors. The hop is nondescript but provides some white pepper bitterness. Short aftertaste.

Canned 2/24/22; drank 3/24/22 @ the Yarchives.

See-through dull orange appearance.

A rough pour yielded a nice white head; strong, frothy lace.

Creamed corn, soft soap & faint citrus notes in the nose.

Medium mouthfeel.

Sweet corn, cream & dry wheat flavors.

Kinda sweet, but overall pleasant. I'd have another.

Pours a crystal clear burnished gold color. Thick, four finger frothy white head forms on the beer before dissipating, no residual head remains on the beer. Lightly effervescent. Aroma has notes of sweet bread, a touch of orange blossom honey, a bit of straw. Not much else as it comes across rather bland overall.

Taste is more of the same - some lightly toasted pilsner malt, a touch of sweet bread, some honey sweetness, with some grassy hops towards the back end. There is a subtle orange zest character to this that I often get from the spalter select hops. Overall its fine, it is just kind of bland. Reminds me in some ways more of a basic american lager than a pilsner. Feel is medium bodied, crisp, with some moderate carbonation.

Overall its fine, I would drink it again, but it is not one I would seek out. Honestly this is the kind of beer you bring to a picnic because it will have wide appeal - and I suspect that is what they were going for with this one.

Canned on 2/24/22. 12oz can poured into a tulip.

Pours golden with solid clarity; white head that fades leaving solid retention and lacing.

The aromas are on the mild side. Bread and crackers come through. Hints of corn. Mild floral and citrus notes. Malts are there.

The flavors basically follow the nose. More corn and crackers. More breads along with some grains. More floral notes. More hints of citrus coming through. Some caramel coming through as well. Moderate to low bitterness. Subtle sweetness. Solid malt backbone. Alcohol goes unnoticed.

Mouthfeel is light with active carbonation. It's sharp, fluffy, smooth and easy to drink.

This is an alright pilsner. I love me a good pilsner/lager but this one doesn't seem to have that "it factor" for me personally. It's still fine and isn't bad at all or anything like that.

poured from a 12oz can into a tall New Glarus pilsner glass. pours straw gold with just over two fingers of soapy white head. aromas of grass and herbal hops. it’s got a perfume-like smell to it from the hops and a bit of mineral qualities. pretty pleasant nose. taste follows with a fairly hefty dose of hops but finishes light and crispy. as crispy as it is, i would prefer it be a little less malty than it comes off. it’s still clean, refreshing and easy drinking. i honestly expected it to be a lot hoppier than it is. could use a little more effervescence on the mouthfeel but it’s not thin. the maltiness gives it some heft i just wish it was a bit more carbonated. overall, solid lager from floyds, who knows that game all too well. here is hoping we see more distro 6pks of lagers!

A nice light lager. It leans more to a “crafty” AAL or American lager than a German pilsner. But it is a tasty beer.

Faintly sparkling bright golden with a short off-white foam head settling to a fine chain.

While sweeter and even a little more in the helles vein than I'd typically want out of a pilsner, it's quite tasty and delicately crisp with a notion of white cornbread and a hint of green grape skins.

The medium body has a tingly vibration that comes to a clean, just barely semi-dry finish that's in effect almost wet.

Long live the White Castle Speedway!

Pours and inviting and transparent golden amber color with an impressing off white head that slowly dissipates.
Aroma is all pilsner, biscuit malts and floral hops with a touch of black pepper.
Taste follows with the pepper actually being an artifact of the hop which presents itself on the palate with a dry bitterness that somehow remains long after the drink is finished.
The feel is excellent, very quaffable indeed.
OA, aside from that curious harsh or bitterness that remained, this is a very enjoyable beer.
