This complex double India pale ale has an intense citrus and floral hop aroma balanced by a velvety malt body which has been augmented with lactose milk sugar. With this different take on an IPA we have brewed an ale that is both pleasing to drink and, once again, “not normal.” Cheers! June release.

ABV varies by batch.

Slightly hazy orange color with a nice white head. The aroma blends citrus, overripe fruit, and a clear hit of lactose, giving it a sweet, creamy edge. The flavor leans hoppy but is weighed down by generous lactose sweetness on the finish. Drinkable, but overall not particularly impressive.

From a tall aluminum can, this beer is a honey colored liquid with a lasting white head. The aroma has a floral, ripe fruit, and a boozy depth. The taste is sweet, with a ripe fruit flavor. Boozy with overripe fruit. Flavorful and full in body. Interesting and enjoyable.

Copper colored with a light haziness. There’s a densely packed one inch tan head on top. Heavy lacing on the glass. There’s aroma is of mandarin orange. I’m tasting bitter mandarin orange and light crackery malt. The mouth is pretty easygoing for the ABV.

Nice balance of hoppiness and creamy lactose, making it similar to a milkshake IPA.

First time having this beer. Its very nice the mouthfeel is slick. I had no idea this beer has been being brewed for many years and was the very early stages of lactose in ipas.

Today I'm enjoying the first Apocalypse Cow that Three Floyds has sold in about three years. The 16 oz. can I purchased today was filled yesterday at 1:19 PM. ABV is now 9.8% Pours a slightly hazy golden amber with lasting creamy white head and excellent rings of lacing. Aroma has noticeable lactose as well as melons, dank pine and citrus hops. Taste is almost sweet at first, but ends up bitter like any IPA from this brewery. Body is almost full, with a sticky mouthfeel. This is a weird one, for sure, but as a lactose imperial IPA, it succeeds.

The pint can has been emptied into a clear glass liter mug. It went fairly well. Although the head is stark white and somewhat foamy, it's not expanding like some aerosol insulation. There's some malt and hops to smell, but they're muted, maybe even cluttered. There's good and bad, or at least not so good about the taste. From the onset, there's a nicely sharp hop bite. But the added lactose, however mildly dosed, makes this a little too sweet, something only rectified during the finish. This is hard to believe it couldn't be better without the milk sugar. Surprisingly, the lactose doesn't add much to the body. Yet, for those that don't want a sticky IPA, that's not a problem. There's more taste of alcohol than there is glass lacing and the head is short-lived. Not bad for a milkshake beer, but a recommended pass.
