Presentation: Sampled at the Fernandes Brewery Tap, Wakefield during my Easter Trip back to the UK.
On Pump #3 of 6, during a lazy session on an early Monday evening. Listed at 4.6% at the base of the horizontal oval shaped Pumpclip.
Appearance: Dark black body with a rather strange light gray colored thick head. Pulled through a tight sparkler, the Stout benefits from a nice creamy head which lasts and laces extremely well.
Nose: Roasted malts as expected, but this one has a very bitter aroma of dark chocolates. Simple nose but rather appealing nonetheless.
Taste: Runs in with some burnt caramel which deflects the bitterness for a short time. Roasted malts, some burnt toast, a Formula One rubber skid mark and sharp chocolate bitterness in the dry finish. Did I really write skid mark in my notes?? Guess so.
Mouthfeel: A little lacking in this department. The creamy texture and carbonation assist in providing a decent enough experience, but if felt a little thin at times, especially given that it is a whopping 4.6%, rather high for UK brews.
Drinkability: Classic English Stout profile, nice assembly of flavors that suffer from a light mouthfeel though I feel. Nevertheless, I could manage a couple but the thin feel somehow nags at me long term.
Overall: A special from Fernandes that has now been brewed several times it seems. Tasty stuff, but I cant imagine this without the benefit of a tight Northern sparkler to be honest.
