Presentation: Sampled at Fernandes Brewery Tap in Wakefield, West Yorkshire during a lazy Sunday afternoon spent crawling around Wakefield Town Centre. Handpump had a light blue bordered rectangular clip with a black & white background depicting a Harvest. Barleymow is listed at 7.1% ABV.
Appearance: Black body with a dark brown body when held to the light. Light tan head, creamy at first but with a partially broken covering at the death. Sliding lacing and a formative conditioning.
Nose: Roasted malts with a light toasted burnt feel. Depressed caramel and a warming contribution from the alcohol.
Taste: Smooth start with roasted malts and a nice bitterness that balances. Toasted middle with some dark chocolate. Gentle hints of sourness came through in the finish adding an aged character to this Barleywine.
Mouthfeel: Big feel, the fine Cask conditioning mixes nicely with the alcohol and definitive roasty malts. Feels big throughout.
Drinkability: Hard one to tag, a Half Pint of this fine during an afternoon or evening session as a whole Pint can get a little too much. But I did finish the night with a Pint of Barleymow on the Sunday and it is certainly a very drinkable nightcap after a few Pints.
Overall: Malty and roasty with an Old Ale feel to it. A big hitter for Fernandes, and quite the treat on cask at 7.1%.
