I was a bit surprised to see this as a tap selection and had to ask the bartender who brewed the beer. $6 draught at Deep Ellum on 3/19
Poured a jet black color with a dark cream one finger head that keeps a nice retention for the whole life of the beer. Thick and sticky lacing coats the entire glass. Roasted malt notes hit the nostrils first. Coffee and sweet chocolate aromas. Earthy and woody notes are there, but subtle and unassuming. Slight oats also noticeable. Leafy hop profile fades in and out.
Roasted malt and chocolate flavors are the biggest players here. Starts out with the roasted malt and finishes strong with sweet chocolate. Interlaced are bitter coffee flavors that are long lasting into the finish. Residual chocolate sweetness in the aftertaste. Creamy smooth with a milkiness that coats the tongue with a nice layer. Medium bodied, which I was a tad surprised about as the look and the mouthfeel are both very good. Leafy hops show themselves with bitterness coupled with the coffee. Earthy and woody flavors aren't as apparent as I would have liked, especially for an "oak aged" beer. Abv is only at 7, which also makes me scratch my head a bit. Not a bad beer--better than their regular stout offering, but then again, you usually don't get a perfect Cisco unless you're on-island.
